How do you know if your vocation is to the married life

I am not sure the best way to explain this. I have been good friends with a young man who I recently (being a month ago) have got very close to, we started dating. He is Catholic and is someone I really respect and I do believe that God has some great plans for him.

I am looking at our relationship in the view that we are both someone’s future spouse, in the sense that it could be me or it could be another.

He lives at quite a distance from where I do and visiting him is going to be limited, so we message and talk on the phone a few times in a week. It was just this evening, we were both chatting away and the subject of vocations came up. He said, “What do you feel your vocation is in life? Do you feel it is to be a mother?”…
I told him that I do honestly believe that that is my calling in life…
  • How do you know what your calling is though? Can it be a feeling, or just as sense of being drawn to something?

I truly believe that your vocation will be something that you will truly desire in your heart (maybe you won’t realize that desire right away, but God will eventually reveal it to you). You may also see God at work in your life to help make your desired vocation become a reality.

For example, at this point in my life, I believe my vocation is to one day be a married man since I just find myself drawn to that life. I’ve thought about other vocations (such as the priesthood or consecrated single life), but they just don’t hold my attention for very long and I find myself quickly back to daydreaming about how I am going to raise my children in the faith and how I would like to fill a whole pew in the church one day!

I just wouldn’t worry about “figuring out” your vocation! God will reveal it to you in good time. In the meantime, just focus on loving Him with all of your might!

God bless!

Haha…I do that too…except the problem for me is that I do also feel myself pretty strongly drawn to priesthood/religious life. Now THAT’s when it’s complicated - when you feel drawn to both ways!

But yeah, as you said, it all comes down to growing in our relationship with God and praying to know and accept His will for us.

In response to the OP, yes, sometimes it can just be a feeling. But often you can’t know for sure until this feeling is validated by meeting and dating a man who you may marry, or even up until the weeks before marriage! If you feel attracted to the married life, then it stands to reason you should date or be available for dating if you feel the right man comes along - if, that is, you aren’t also discerning religious life because that might change things if you were.

OK, thank-you for your responses. My mind is now more at ease 🙂
