Reciently while reading I developed the question How do we as individuals KNOW that we love God?

We are told to love God with all our heart. It is said a wise man will fear God. Also I’ve heard it said that we will sacrifice for those that we love.

The Question: How do you know you love God?

i would recommend reading I john for a complete answer, but two things gleaned from this reading will be:

a) because we keep His commandments
b) because we love our neighbor

peace!

Hi Jeffreedy,
I agree and just want to add on to your list
and songs of praise and worship will well up in your heart and overflow from your mouth, and suddenly you will realise " hey I am singing ( quietly for me) and worshiping God.
This is one of my prayers. I ask for this and it gives me so much joy. To wake in the middle of the night, or to be walking down the street. or be anywhere and suddenly become conscious of the fact that a praise or worship song is running through you. Additionally , these songs are meaningful so take note of what the words say. What do I pray for. As Paul says " anything"
If you pray for something you KNOW God wants you to have, you will surely receive it. So pray for this if you are not already doing so and feel joy in the knowledge of your love for Him.
Christ be with you

I know that I love God because, in the darkest days of my depression I knew that He was still there. This, despite my efforts to doubt His existence. During the years I suffered before finally getting help for my mental illness, I couldn’t fully give up the knowledge that He exists.

Not only that He existed, but that there was a reason for my life. I still have days of doubt. But it’s more a doubt about my purpose, about my own faith. But I can never doubt God’s existence or love.

Not from a theoligal standpoint but from a devotional standpoint I would say it is the immitation of Jesus weping and crying out loud.

NAB 1 JOHN 4:20

If anyone says,
"I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

NAB ROM 13 Love Fulfills the Law.

**Owe no debt to anyone except the debt that binds us to love one another. He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not murder; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and any other commandment there may be are all summed up in this, saying (namely) “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love never wrongs the neighbor, hence love is the fulfillment of the law.

**

NAB DEU 11:1

**“Love the LORD, your God, therefore, and always heed his charge: his statutes, decrees and commandments.” **

NIV JOH 14:23

**Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”

NAB JOH 15:9

“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Live on in my love. You will live in my love if you keep my commandments, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and live in his love. All this I tell you that my joy may be yours and your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.NAB 1JO 2:5

**But whoever keeps his word, truly has the love of God been made perfect in him. The way we can be sure we are in union with him is for the man who claims to abide in him to conduct himself just as he did. ****NAB 2JO 1:5 **

But now, my Lady, I would make this request of you (not as if I were writing you some new commandment; rather, **it is a commandment we have had from the start): let us love one another. This love involves our walking according to the commandments, and as you have heard from the beginning, the commandment is the way in which you should walk.****NIV PRO 3:1 **

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. NAB 1JO 3:23

His commandment is this: we are to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and are to love one another as he commanded us.NAB DEU 11:22

"For if you are careful to observe all these commandments I enjoin on you, loving the LORD, your God, and following his ways exactly, and holding fast to him, . . . . "

Peace in Christ,
Steven Merten

Mostly because of a supernatural attraction that I have had for Jesus since I was a pre-schooler. I have never been free of it, even at the times of life when I wanted to be.
Also - because of the ammount of attention I pay to my own sin. The more aquainted I am with loving God - the more my sin seems more plain and obvious.

I think the more you love God the more you hate sin and love the sinner.

I share a similar experience of loving God… Annunciata:)

The most absolute way you can know that you love God is when you are a few seconds away from death for the sake of the Gospel, and you don’t give a second thought about it.

Most of us will never be called to receive such a blessing.

So is loving God an act or a feeling, or both?

So is loving God an act or a feeling, or both?
It’s a choice, an act of the will.
God will give us feelings of love if He chooses, but often we don’t get them.
I love my husband, but don’t remember it all the time. But if he asks for something I do it, and he interprets it as love. So it may be with God.

Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.”

I think the more you love God the more you hate sin and love the sinner.
the more i read these, the more i realise that i am not loving god as although i hate sin i also avoid the sinners which is not god’s way… 😦 too self-righteous:(

Many years ago I gave myself to God to do with what He wanted I would go up to the tabernacle and pray that God would do with me what He wanted. Was that love? I had an accident Dr’s let me down so I knew that I was alive because there had to be a God who would not let me down. He was all I wanted ever and in what ever way I wanted to serve Him. That was all I ever wanted no matter where it took me, I didn’t care.

Years latter I asked God how I could love Him the way He loved everyone. He asked me if I loved my parents, at this I said yes. Do you love your brothers and sisters the same way you love your parents? I said I think so, at this he asked if I loved my cousins with the same love I had for my parents, I said I didn’t’ know some of them, do you love the youth in gangs with the same love you have for your parents? I told Him I didn’t know them.
The next question put it all in a nut shell, Jesus asked what would happen if I took Mary as my mother and Jesus as my father? I said that I would have spiritual parents; the saints would become my cousins’ friends, what would happen to my love for others He asked? I thought and said because I would love them all the same without discrimination.

Since then I just want love to love others. Help others pick others up when they are down.
God bless

it is when I start to go to the Confession more often.
I cannot say how much I love Jesus all I can say is that to only think of Him makes me cry I have just seen the film of the exorcisim of emily Rosewhich made me cry that she offered herself to Jesus and yet I see myself as little and insignificant and unworthy of anything I may ave and that brings me to tears, I only know that I wish to love Him and to see Him loved.
If only one day I could do something that would bring a smile to His glorious, loving most beautiful face then I would have done something that would be worth something.
