How do you know when to stop praying for someone in purgatory?

Surely there is a time when your prayers are no longer needed as the soul you have been praying for has been let out.

Or since God exists outside of time, whatever prayers you say, no matter what, will be used in shortening a person’s stay in purgatory?

Kinda cool to think about
