How do you know your doing purgatory acts?

How do you know that your doing something that warrants purgatory? my vision of purgatory is like someone that has to go to detention for doing something wrong, he knows hes done the wrong he has to simply purify himself through time and struggling, that being said, shouldnt we know when we are doing something that warrants purgatory? when we ve don so we can then purify ourselves of it here and now rather than go to purgatory,

i question this becuase I dont want to spend a second there… no time to waste for me

Examine your conscience, meditate, read, pray etc. This will give you a decent idea. But don’t dwell too much on your sins. St. Therese will teach you the way to avoid Purgatory. Love is the penance that He asks of us - a humble, confident and persevering love.

Always aim for Heaven.

We are going to sin…we are sinners. You hit on what I think is important though… awareness of sin. The closer we get to God the more aware we will be of our sins hence the more desire not to sin.

Also instead of saying ‘go to purgatory’ it seems it is more correct to say ‘go through purgatory’ since it is not so much a place, but a process.

Very excellent question. I have been thinking of this very same thing for quite some time now so I am glad you mentioned this.

Catholic teaching states that it is very important that we receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation by going to confession to confess all our mortal sins. We need absolution from our sins from the priest who is in Jesus’ place and then we need to keep vigilant to our faith. Our penance is always to do acts of charity as much as possible, giving of ourselves to others in need.

One does not “warrant purgatory”; one might “merit purgatory.”

This means it is not someting we DO; no, rather some that we fail to DO."through time and struggling, that being said, shouldnt we know when we are doing something that warrants purgatory? when we ve don so we can then purify ourselves of it here and now rather than go to purgatory,

Purgatory for those who may not know floes from Christ Love, Mercy and Grace.

It has to do with the :“Nature of Sin.”

First: Purgatory exist because it is God’s Desire [but NOT a command] that each and every soul be “saved.” 1 Tim 2:4

In Order for any soul to be enabled to access Heaven; that Soul must either "be perfect: upon death of the body, OR if death is without any unconfessed or unforgiven Mortal sins 1 John 5:16-17 & Jn. 20: 18-20; Christ Mercy created Purgatory [think of it as a sort of SOULS WASH] to be perfected and at some point attain the Beatific Vision: Heaven.

ALL Sins have a “public nature” meaning that all sins effect not only the sinner, but also the Church and others by bad-example.

Therefore all sins incur a debt imposed by God in an amount determined only b=y God.

We call this "The Temporal Punishment: due to our sins. Christ alone is the book keeper of the debt accrued and the amount of that debt “repaid” in satisfaction for that debt.

But through the POWER of the Key’s to heaven entrusted to the Church ALONE Mt. 16: 18-20 & Mt 28":16-20; the Church is permitted and does offer ways in which to repay this debt while we live. Works of charity & “Indulgences” BOTH can make payment on this Temporal Punishment.

Indulgences take two forms:
Partial repayment

Full payment up to that moment in our lives “Plenary Indulgences”

To attain the graces of either one must fulfill exactly the conditions applied by the Church as directed by Her. GOOGLE “catholic indulgences” for further information.

The issue here though is that Only Christ knows how mush debt our sins have accrues; and with the exception a fully correct Plenary Indulgence which removes all current debt; only Christ knows how much of this debt is repaid by our acts of charity and partial indulgences.

Also the Sacrament of the Last Rites also removes as a part of this sacrament all sins and all debt due to our sins much as Baptism does.

Purgatory does NOT replace sacramental Confession John 20:19-23

And Temporal Punishment remains even if Confessed and Forgiven. It is debt imposed by God and as determined by God; in conjunction with His Church; forgiven and repaid.

So very true. So very accurate. The light of God’s love, grace and mercy makes manifest the darkness of this world.
