How do you let go of resentment towards God…

honestly i just don’t want to pray when I get into this bitter mood-it makes me angrier, sometimes I wish God doesn’t exist because things would be easier

I am frankly exhausted and I feel trapped in this religion sometimes. I don’t know what else to do besides avoiding it altogether.

Has anyone been in this situation before? How do you get out?

Any answer or advice here would be insufficient to address in depth difficulty especially against God.

You need to find the root cause in your life which could be the reason to your present problem. But for that, perhaps it is good to attend a retreat where you have ample time to examine yourself and maybe listen to (name removed by moderator)uts about bitter root and root causes so that you can be ministered for an inner healing. Of course, that will involve a number of things to do like going for counseling and Sacrament of Penance.

The causes for resentment against God can be due to reason (s) much deeper than we thought and those could include incidents that happened in time past which we may have overlooked or indeed forgotten.

In the short term, you can ask yourself why you are angry with God or blaming Him remembering that God always wants good things for His children, for He is a loving Father God. If our human fathers who are evil and imperfect, want to give us good things, what more to say about the perfect Father in heaven?

Thus before you blame God, it is good to know His attributes first because your problems and short coming may not be due to God but perhaps due to mistakes in your life.

This is some of the things that one can ponder upon in such situation.

Stop trying. Simply that. Let time pass, look after your needs and do something you enjoy. God is in all good things. All kindness, all gentleness

Be positive and take time to do something you find restoring and healing

My guess is you are resentful because you are blaming God for events that are not His responsibility or you expect things from Him that you’re not getting - or both.

If either of those assumptions are true, stop assigning Him responsibility for things you or others should be doing & you’ll get along a lot better with Him.

Thanks for the reply. The resentment comes and goes but it doesn’t stem from events that have happened (eg me failing a test and blaming God) but more of things that are out of my control…so it’s hard to let go because I know it will never ever change and it won’t get better. Hard to understand why a loving God would do this (not allow, but ‘do’). Keep telling myself that I am a mere human and I do not understand but it doesn’t seem applicable in this scenario.

You are welcome. 🙂

The stark reality of things that are beyond our control but happen anyway can be indeed source of great resentment for us.

If it in anyway makes you feel better to hear it from me, I can tell you that this is very common for all of us.

There is no simple solution for this but perhaps a drastic change in paradigm shift may be required to lessen the pain from its consequence.

I would recommend the serenity prayer, if you have not heard of it already, and really try to reflect and internalize on it.

I am on my handphone now but it goes something like this:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at the time,
Enjoying one moment at the time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.

… "

You can get the full version from the internet if you want to.

God bless you.

I look at our Lord on the Cross and contemplate all He did for me. Picturing this ( or watch Mel Gibson’s movie on our Lord) It brings me back into alignment.

I know intellectually that control is an illusion- but it happens to be one of my favorite illusions. Many, many people have trouble with uncertainty. However, how we handle the uncertainty in our lives when things don’t go as we expect, very much determines our happiness - in my humble opinion. Quoted below are three passages from the Bible that inform my prayers and that I find invaluable in dealing with my own control issues:

Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.

Galatians 5:22*
*
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.*

Ask Mary to help you

Dear Lord,

Please hold me in Your arms, forgive me my sins and make me the way You want me to be.

The times when negative emotions happen is when you have to draw even closer to God through praise. Jesus is our Redeemer, and He will give you the grace to overcome these feelings.

To hold resentment toward God is a negative mindset.l, and the key I believe is not the circumstances, but the ability to rise above them. This is only possible sometimes with His help.

Reading of Scripture & of the Saints. Seeing firsthand what other revered heroes & heroines went through in the course of their earthly lives: the injustices that were put on their shoulders. The injustices suffered by Christ, in particular.

Nobody wants to suffer in vain: if we think we’re suffering in vain, bitterness comes out of it. We have to believe that whether times are good or bad, there is a reason for it.

On the plus side, you must be strong in faith of God’s role in your life if you so readily feel bitterness. In spite of my Catholic faith, I can still be a little bit deistic without realizing it: assuming that everything that happens is consequential. If something bad happens, I never even think to blame God for it.

Jesus knows what pain you are experiencing because nothing is hidden from his eyes. So you really can’t keep anything from him that he doesn’t already know. Why not tell him in an honest and open fashion about your feelings and then in a simple way, ask him to lead you thru it to end it.

Because the only way you will be happy is to end it … the war. And Jesus knows how hard it must be. So ask him…politely, to help you understand.

He created the whole universe and everything in it, he can certainly guide you to your peace of mind.

I heard of an experience of someone who had lost her unborn baby. She resented it for about 25 years. During which time she had several different battles with illness, one of which put her in bed for long periods. Finally one day she forgave God for taking her baby and she asked him for forgiveness. When she did this she regained her health and began to live a life worth living again.

Anger, hatred, and resentment is nothing but poison to our own system preventing us from knowing our true life and peace.

I feel like I’m allergic to prayer-actual prayer without me whining. I wouldn’t blame God for not responding, but it has been so long

How do you know that it is God doing this thing?
I don’t really want to get into details but basically things that cannot be controlled/not done by anyone

It’s not something I or anyone should be doing, like you said in another post

But you don’t really know that God is doing this bad thing to you - you can’t know. So stop blaming him. This is what God has in mind for us:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

The last news I received medically is that I could be on a slow crawl to a slow death … I don’t resent God for it … I look forward to the day when I can see my Lord and I will use all the time I have left on this earth to praise Him and adore Him. God is never the problem, we are.

My apologies if my answer sounded uncaring … I am going through a difficult time … I will pray for you and hope that you find peace with our Lord.
