How do you make life-changing decisions?

I am currently employed in a hospital in an office position. I am an RN but unable to do bedside nursing due to medical problems. I am being offered a position with an organization that is a large, internationally-known healthcare/rescue organization. (I do not wish to identify it or seem to give endorsement here.)

The job would be management level and will offer advancement - neither of which I have at my current job. The drawback is that it will involve a lot more physical work than I thought “management” would have. Also the hours will be full-time, but no particular schedule. I would work some Saturdays and maybe need to be up some mornings as early as 5 AM.

The upside is that it is a job that would give a huge payback in knowing I am helping others and saving lives!

My current position is very easy physically - sitting at a computer mostly. It pays well. I work 9 - 5:30, Monday thro Friday and never work weekends or holidays. But the routine is beginning to feel boring.

The other thing on the horizon is a Parish Nurse opening at my Church. I am on a committee of medical persons in the Church and we are trying to develop a medical ministry with a Parish Nurse job. I have NO idea if this will become a paid position or even when it will become a reality. Also - if is does become a position - will it pay what I need to earn? We all know Church jobs cannot usually meet the paychecks that hospitals or other institutions can match. I know if I accept the job with the organization (above) I will have to abandon the work with the Medical Ministry group.

So my question to all of you is this:

How do you go about making life-changing decisions? I am praying nearly full-time about this issue. I want to feel certain that I am following God’s will for me and give Him the work of my hands and mind in the best way I can. I also do not want to endanger my health. I face the real possibility of needing orthopedic surgery several times in the next ten years. I am 56 years old and I want to work for the next 9 or 10 years if I can.

If anyone has ideas and suggestions about ways they make life-impacting decisions, and would like to share them - I would like to hear them! Following what God wants me to do is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing in my life. So praying is Number One. What else do you do?

It sounds like both sides of this situation have their ups and downs for you.

I’m 19 and an undergraduate right now so I really know what you mean by life changing decisions, I’m just starting to figure them out myself.

I know it sounds completely corny, but follow your heart. Go with what will make you happy, even if it is just by virtue of the fact you are trying something new.

I grappled with the whole wanting to know Gods plan for me as well, but I learned to just not worry so much because God has me by the hand, He always has, even when I didn’t realize it. I just trust that if I do something that is outside His plan for me, He’ll find a way to let me know.

Best of luck to you.

A friend of mine suggested writing an exhaustive list of pros and cons for the choice I had in front of me. I prayed to the Holy Spirit and began writing. Regardless of the outcome of the list (which had more pros or cons) I began to be completely certain of the path I needed to take, so I jumped in. Immediately, doors began to open and everything worked out beautifully (so far :D)

Along with your prayers, sit down and make a list of pros and cons. If you still aren’t clear, get together with a couple friends and talk over your list and what you see on it. If you still aren’t clear, stay where you are and wait for God to move you to something new in His time.

(of course, this is all my own opinion :o)

Thank you for the answers. I did make a list. I have decided to turn down the manager position mainly for two reasons: the physical aspect and also because I felt truly drawn to continue to work on the Parish Nurse ministry. I think it is so needed in my parish which is fairly large and many elderly. I have an MD on the committee with me and we are going to work this out hopefullu in the next few months. I just feel that is where my heart lies and where Jesus wants me.

Thanks again! 🙂

God bless you in your work!

After I made my own list, I chose to pursue my elementary (K-5) classroom teacher license, and everything’s gone well. But it seems God is asking me to pursue this concurrently with my doctorate and my current teaching position (K-5 music). What a surprise!

Follow your choice with confidence, and continue to surrender all your efforts and desires to God. He will always make His choices clear to the soul that seeks to follow His will in all things. 👍

I would say I alternate between prayer and research until my conscience holds a clear position regardless of how much I challenge it.

Usually my conscience and reason are aligned, but there has been one occasion where my reason suggested a different course than my conscience no matter how much I prayed, discerned, and researched; the more I researched, the more confident my reason was. The more I prayed, the more confident my conscience was. I believe firmly that God was acting within me to help me go against my reason of what was good, because my reason was misguided in some way (I have some guesses of how, years later) - so God was responding to my prayers to let His Will be done.

At the same time, research is critical for me - it seems to be part of how God calls me to participate in His graces. I changed my mind on something fairly important just this morning after asking others about it as part of my research. Sometimes research leads me to figure out what and how to pray.

Thank you, LFL. I used research as well and got a few opinions from people I trusted. I did not ask many people because I have found in the past that doing so only muddled the process more. Of course, my #1 person to debate with is my husband as he has to live with the decisions I make! 😃 But I researched and debated between reason and conscience - feeling rather like I had the “devil and angel” on my shoulders. I also did a little “What if…” scenario, carrying my decision each way out in my mind, trying to see what would happen if I made this or that choice. That seemed to help a lot. One of my friends told me to do that.

The proof of my choice is that every day since, I have felt it was the right way to go. I have not woken up even one morning feeling regret.

And - some of the Parish Nurse items are beginning to come together! Another good indicator, I think. 👍

Thank you again!
