To be honest,I don’t care if things are sins and I don’t feel a desire to love God,do the things He wants etc…
I just pray hoping he help me.
I also don’t trust him and can’t pray his will be done as I don’t believe he wants me to be happy etc…

First, make sure you’re following and listening to Christ, rather than a made-up story about him based on the “hive mind” of generally underinformed Catholics.

That is, go back to the basics. God said from the cloud when introducing His Son, in which God is well pleased, “listen to Him.”

Mary last told anybody to “do what He says.”

Put those two together, and that’s the formula. What He says sounds bizarre and contradictory. Stick with it and open yourself to believe there is a world in which the first really is the last, and the greatest really is the one who serves. A world in which the one who shows up last may get paid just as much as the “on time” arrival. Where the tax repentant sinner is received with 100 times the joy of the righteous – so hey if you’re a sinner than join the club because the water is warm and gives life.

So how to do this? Read the gospels, and if you are short on time find actual quotes from Jesus and how He interacted with those around Him. Once for Lent I decided to start with the gospel of John 🙂 and read at least one chapter a day. It became so much more interesting reading it as a story instead of a clipping and a homily every week. Or go to biblegateway.com and play the NIV version aloud while you either pay attention or do something else with it in the background.

All these are metaphors with as many applications as there are situations in each of our lives. I call this the “holographic nature” of the Bible. The entire Truth is revealed in many, many ways over the entire scripture in ways that speak to all, like Jesus being crucified. But then it has individual impact on each individual soul, and each particular time you think of it or hear it, or see something like it played out in your own experience.
The idea is that you hang around the word of God. Reading the scripture is like reading the words of the Man, but even if you’re not paying attention, it’s like you’re hanging around while they’re hanging around and you catch the vibes. You’ll learn much more about Jesus by encountering the four gospels Matt Mark, Luke, and John, and then I suggest try a NT book like Romans. If you taste and see this, and put aside what others have said about Jesus, and don’t tax yourself to comprehend a bunch of fancy theology about Him, just “hang with Him.” Your heart will pick up connections to His love that you would never get by listening to others preach and fight about Him.

About prayer, start with Heb 11:1 Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.

So basically, praying is kind of like wishful thinking, except with hope of truth or at least value. When I slam my hand in the car door, my mind and body “pray” right through my mouth, “Lord Jesus help me!” When I see an act of kindness extended, my mind wants to go “awww.” These are all prayers. Our every thought and action is a prayer in that wide sense. To me this is when one’s prayer life and “active” life merge. Every breath I take brings me gratitude for my ability to draw it, even though I don’t say, “Thank you Jesus” every 15 seconds. I feel that grateful for my life, but I don’t voice it.

I’m wondering if the reason that God and prayer both turn you suspicious, is that so many people think of prayer as basically giving voice to some wishful thinking or some odd and rather bland sounding word patterns that others repeat ad nauseum? If this kind of prayer doesn’t particularly impress you, you are not alone. Jesus has your back on this one:

We love to say the Lord’s prayer. LOVE to say it. But how many times do we actually look at ourselves and consider what Jesus told us immediately before giving us that template? Which btw is a conceptual template not necessarily a formula but that’s ok people like others to write their thoughts – that’s why Hallmark is so successful.

“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. 7 [c]In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.[d] 8 Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

When I see that Christians are “showing the devil who’s boss” by having big public well-organized “prayer protests” and “meet me at the flag” and the like, just can’t wait to beat the atheists at their own petty games and show them that by golly we can pray in their face whether they like it or not. And then we become livid when they return the favor by telling us we have to like them flaunting their perverted sexuality in our faces and making us accept it. So you can see that just because it is commonly accepted as prayer, and that somehow all prayer is good when you make it clear to everybody that you pray to the biggest baddest God of them all, and if they don’t like it then they can and probably will go to hell.

So how do you pray? Gosh I get so long winded so I’ll refer you to a book I like. It has a “look inside” section on Amazon. It is a modern and easy to read book, written by a Jesuit and used at some seminaries for their introductory prayer classes.

It goes through all expression of prayer included recited prayers (talking at God) and extemporaneous prayer (talking to God) and contemplative prayer (listening to God). And it does not insult the way that Catholics pray, but in fact gives suggestions to make it more meaningful yet.

How do you make yourself want to follow Christ?

Get to know Him. 🙂

:blessyou:

Many times the only thing we can do is ask God to change our hearts. As long as we are willing, God can work with us. Asking God to help you, as you are doing, is a good start.

We can come to trust God by getting to know him better. We cannot get to know him unless we spend time with him. Reading scripture, praying, and attending mass will go a long way towards this goal. But this will take time. Any relationship is constantly developing and growing.

In scripture Jesus said that God delights in giving good gifts to his children. God loves us so much, like a father loves his children. We cannot imagine the love he has for us. So, God does want us to be happy. The happiness God wants for us, though, is primarily to find our Joy in knowing Him. Walking closely with God is the greatest joy anyone can ever know.

Ask God for all these things–the ability to love him, to trust him, to care about obeying him…all that you lack, ask him to supply. God is faithful. Keep walking with him and you will grow into him.

You can’t “Make yourself want to…”. It’s as simple as that.

What can do is to decide for yourself that you are going to approach these matters with an open mind and then study and pray.

Right now your lack of trust and your disbelief are setting up serious roadblocks.

If you truly believe as you write above…Why do you WANT to follow Christ?

Well, insofar as sin is concerned, the times I’ve been hurt by people most in my life were when people generally sinned against me, or me against them, or both.

I´ve seen that when we are married but are unfaithful, it hurts someone. It tears up famlies.

When we lie, it hurts someone. If you have ever been lied to, especially chronically, it erodes the trust in a relationship, so besides being “sinful”, it has a practical application.

It’s like the story of the boy who cried “wolf”, lied, and lied. Then, one day he finally told the truth, and nobody believed him, because he was a liar! The moral to that story is that even when a liar tells the TRUTH, because he’s a liar, nobody would believe him.

When we kill someone, likewise, harms a lot of people.

We can say we don´t care about morality …unless we are on the RECEIVING end of lies, harm, etc., THEN, we care!

Sin is about having some basic rules of behavior, and were all of us to adhere to these…not lie, cheat, steal, kill, we would have a better world.

Rules are our freedom, though some have it backwards, think rules are the problem.

Look at disasters. I read a book on disaster relief, and when there was a loss of law and order, nothing else could get done. The FIRST thing that had to be done in those cases would be to reestablish law and order.

That’s how important rules are. As long as it´s a “free for all” with everything being “okay”, we will never have a moment´s peace. There will be problems abounding.

The people who have the most problems are those with no moral compass at all…who think everything and anything is okay. They will one day discover, through their own personal experience, that this doesn´t work.

I once saw a girl rebelling against her parents, doing all kinds of stuff, who got pregnant as a teen. Then, she turned around, realized, the hard way, that didn´t work at that point went back to church.

God is trying to save us some of the heartache, guide us, but if we´re stubborn, we might need to learn from an “unwanted pregancy” and being abandoned by a partner, that marriage was the way to go after all, say, and the rules, though burdensome, were better than their alternative. This applies to other aspects of sin, as well, that we are better off with the commandments and God than without.

Noone can love someone they don’t know. You don’t know him or you would love him, because in knowing him you will know just how much he loves you. Once you know just how much he loves you, then you will want to follow him willingly, even tho it means change.

One of the better ways of getting to know him is to pray the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary. And while saying the words, think about the real love he had for you in his suffering. It won’t be long until the ice begins to thaw on your heart from the warmth of his love. And then gradually there will take place a change in your understanding from indifference to actual love.

Then you will understand what he said to his apostles, “I no longer call you servants, but friends.”

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.

You are not alone in what you are currently experiencing regarding trust and love. Many struggle to love and trust as they should, and wish they had more desire to improve. Having desire to increase in virtue is a good thing, though. God can work with that. 🙂 Consider contacting your parish, or a parish near you if you are not registered at any parish, and ask to talk to someone about receiving the rest of your Sacraments. If that is too much, you could ask if there are education/formation opportunities in the Parish for adults who have an interest in Catholicism, but have not had all the sacraments. Also, there may be volunteer opportunities that would allow you to meet and interact with members of the parish. I suspect that the fellowship would be good for you. If you do not trust God, it is likely you do not trust people either, as I think it ordinary for similarities to manifest in our relationships with God and man. I wonder if an improvement in trust of either people or God will lead to more trust in the other.

I generally trust people once I know their character is good/kind but with God I don’t trust Him because Catholic teaching is a lot about the value of suffering etc so I don’t believe Gods will for me is the same as my will for me -eg:to be happy and healthy
I believe His will for me is stuff like Holiness and suffering
I guess it’s true you trust people by knowing them, including God,but I don’t know how to know God as in Church I just feel alone while people do things around me such as sing worship songs, get the Communion etc and when I try to pray alone it’s just like saying a “recording of words” to the air,so to speak.

I see many of Jesus teachings as good such as showing compassion and dignity to the worst off in society, but I have difficulty with other Church teachings such as sexual matters being mortal sins etc…

Unfortunately, with me,my desire to increase in virtue is not from a sincere place but is more due to having “ulterior motives”-a hopeless situation which I wish Gods help for.

I am sorry you are troubled. I am also sorry you are disappointed with your experience at Mass. Your experience of disconnectedness at Mass is not uncommon. That is especially understandable if you do not have a decent grasp of what is happening and cannot receive the Body and Blood of Christ. I am happy you are searching for God, though.

I feel a bit hypocritical discussing God’s will, because I do not feel I personally have done a good job discerning God’s will for my life and attempting to conform my will to His. However, when reading your post, I remembered a passage from the Old Testament.

‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11

This one came to mind also.

"Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:29-30

I once again encourage you to contact a local parish and inquire about opportunities for you to learn more about the Catholic faith. I get the sense that the better people understand Catholic teachings on sexuality, the more they come to accept them.

And finally, a mercenary love, characterized by a desire to serve God in return for desired benefits, is imperfect, but it is a stepping stone to a more pure love. Once again, if you are open to it, God can work with that.

Thank you Elena - this clears up a lot.

There is such a huge amount of “Catholic teaching” that sometimes we can become too focused on one thing. This is OK if it is the root of Christ’s teaching…but in this case (suffering) it is not.
Jesus teaches us that the root of God’s Will for us is Love - Agape in the Greek - which is a deep and profound brotherly love. Jesus reduces all of the law and the prophets to just two commandments - Love God and Love neighbor (Mt 22:36-40). Further, St Paul tells us that Love is the one essential thing (1 Cor 13:1-13) and finally Scripture tells us in 1 John 4:7-8 that Love is the very essence of God.

Yes God wishes us to be holy and that must be our Goal, but growing in holiness must be tied to growing in agape love. If there is suffering tied to this growth, it is because we need discipline, not unlike an athlete who suffers to be the best he can be.
I guess it’s true you trust people by knowing them, including God,but I don’t know how to know God as in Church I just feel alone while people do things around me such as sing worship songs, get the Communion etc and when I try to pray alone it’s just like saying a “recording of words” to the air,so to speak.
This kind of “dryness” is not uncommon - even among the great saints.
Hold fast to Love - especially love of neighbor in these times - and you will continue to grow. In prayer, go ahead and use the “recording of words” - but also feel free to use your own. You may even complain to God. Remember that every recorded prayer was once someone’s personal words…just made up.
I see many of Jesus teachings as good such as showing compassion and dignity to the worst off in society, but I have difficulty with other Church teachings such as sexual matters being mortal sins etc…
Yes these things can be difficult. But again - do not just look on these things as “rules” or “laws” but try to build your understanding on Agape. Agape - mercy and compassion - are the things that allow us to understand such teachings and to properly apply them.
Unfortunately, with me,my desire to increase in virtue is not from a sincere place but is more due to having “ulterior motives”-a hopeless situation which I wish Gods help for.
Do not be afraid. This is very common. It is the early point of the spiritual journey.
Let me recommend to you the book in my signature. It is a wonderful exposition on many of the things that are troubling you.

Don’t be afraid, my love is stronger,
My love is stronger than your fear.
Don’t be afraid, my love is stronger,
And I have promised to be always near.

Let your mind and your heart be in your song. This is to praise God with all your being. (Hesychius)

Great answers above. I’ll add mine anyway, FWIW. Your feelings are very, very common, even for believers. The catechism teaches that, at the Fall of man, he “conceived a distorted image” of God. This means, in my understanding, that God was seen as being angry and arbitrary in His commands and authority.

The main purpose for Jesus’s coming when He did, after centuries of man struggling with his “own way” , the futile way of trying to find satisfaction and happiness in sin, apart from God, was to reveal the Father, to reveal His true face, what Adam should’ve known all along but didn’t want to know because he preferred himself to God, as the catechism puts it: Jesus came to reveal that God exists, that God is infinitely good, trustworthy, and amazingly, humble, even, that He loves man with a lavish, unconditional, love-in spite of our sin-and always had man’s best interest at heart, wanting a happiness for man that only He can give and that is of a scale beyond anything we can begin to imagine. This truth is exactly what we’re here to learn. We all start out with Adam’s attitude; we’re here to learn that he was wrong-that’s the true purpose of our faith, in order that we may turn back to God.
