Hello!

I am currently working on learning about organizing a Marian procession for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at my parish.

As a disclaimer, the priest wants to expose more parishioners with traditional devotions. I work for the parish and am doing this as an administrator for my priest, so it’s completely with his blessing. Obviously, the priest(s) will carry out the procession, but I am helping an over-worked priest prepare for it 🙂

Since it is winter, we will most likely process with a statue of Mary around the inside of the church. I am looking for information about:
  • the history/theology of Marian processions
  • “good form” or instructions when organizing a Marian procession
Thank you so much for your help!! God bles you all!

I know that you are organizing a procession for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, but I found something that might help. If you go to the EWTN website, and the to the document library, and enter “May Crowning” you will find a document from Zenit Daily Dispatch dated Rome, May 6, 2008 called “May Crownings of Mary.” It tell you how to organize a Marian procession. You can just leave out the crowning part, or better yet, save it and use it in May! I hope this will help your parish honor our Blessed Mother on her great feast, and bring many blessings to everyone who takes part.

We have typically had the priest leading the recitation of the rosary while the people processed. Usually a statue or icon of Our Lady was carried, and before/after/in between decades, Marian hymns were sometimes sung.
