How do you promote the TLM?

How to go about this?
I am very connected to my parish, but the TLM I attended the other week and want to continue attending I know I want to invite friends to, and down the line pass out fliers and stuff to promote it. But here’s the issue.
The youth minister at my home parish doesn’t want me taking people away from the youth contemporary mass at our parish.
Also, would it be inappropriate to advertise a TLM mass at another parish, either by passing out flier or word of mouth?
Also, at the parish I attend the TLM, is it not appropriate to pass out fliers at other masses to bulk up attendance at their TLM?
The TLM is beautiful there but sparcely attended. I worry if it doesn’t gain better attendance they may cut it, but their parish doesn’t have any TLM group/ministry and the Una Voce in my county isn’t particularly active.

I don’t want this thread to be just an answer to the above questions sooooo…

How do you or other parishioners or groups you know of promote the TLM?
 
Tell that youth minister that he is just intolerant and hates diversity. See if that throws him off balance 🙂

If you can document a *single example *of the youth contemporary mass at your parish being *so much as mentioned *outside that parish, whether in fliers or church bulletins or the diocesan newspaper, then that constitutes advertising and based on that, you can do *exactly *the same thing with your TLM at the other parish. Just make sure you have an actual copy of the notice on hand when the youth minister tries to silence you. Because what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Then go immediately to the pastor of the parish about it and abide by the pastor’s decision whatever it may be.

Under no circumstances should you actually hand out fliers. That’s just bad form. If you disagree, then think about this: Have you *ever *seen anyone do *anything *like that? This isn’t a grand opening for a full service beauty salon around the corner. Instead, invite friends that you are already friends with, and let it develop from there. Don’t act like a shill either; people can detect that right away and you’ll be pegged as a traditionalist nutcase.

The way the word gets out in my diocese is threefold (that I know of):


  1. *]Consistent coverage in the diocesan newspaper.
    *]A combination of word-of-mouth and self-motivated information (that is, some people find out through friends, while others who are already looking for a TLM seek it on their own)
    *]Modest shotgun advertising such as one or two billboards along a downtown stretch of interstate highway and a few bumper stickers that say the name of the parish and the TLM mass times.

    What is the most effective? For me, #2. I was looking for it and found it on my own. Personally I don’t know of anyone who joined us for reasons #1 or #3. Frankly I don’t read the diocesan newspaper myself and I don’t know anyone who does, and I don’t know of anyone who joined because of the billboard or bumper stickers who wasn’t already looking for the TLM and wouldn’t have found it themselves otherwise.
 
Forget the youth minister he is not important. People have a right to go where they want not be forced to go along with him because he has a monopoly.

It is the parish priest who is important. You do need the parish priests permission before you start handing out or advertising anything on church property which he is responsible for.

Best way to do it is by talking to people and inviting them to come with you to one.
 
I feel like I can say this for a lot of youth that are at that Mass - they are longing for something more, and deserve the right to be informed on all sides, not to be censored by their so tolerant youth minister :rolleyes:

I like the billboard idea too! This will attract a lot of attention.
 
Do you mean that liturgical form that most parishes still refuse to acknowledge much less celebrate? I’m afraid lay promotion of the TLM is a waste of time at our parish and possibly the majority of parishes.

This is true. Watching videos of the Tridentine Mass, reading other people’s experiences, and learning my prayers in Latin has really opened the door of Catholicism even wider for me. At Mass, I feel like it falls short of the liturgy of the past (but I still consider it valid.) One day, I’d like to experience a Latin Mass.
 
Bumper stickers, rubber stamps, grocery store ad boards, local newspaper ads, yellow pages, volunteer to drive someone there, and direct mail.
