Hi , when praying Ave Maria I always pronounce the word “peccatoribus” as ”petchatoribus” which I found here as a correct pronunciation of the double c in latin. However everywhere I look it´s pronounced with “k”. Is it Americans butchering latin or is this word some kind of exception where “cc” is pronounced as a “k”? Thanks.

Peh-ka-tor-re-buus (that’s how it sounds in my head anyway). Two c’s becoming a k sound is correct pronunciation.

Even though it has a double “c,” since it precedes an “a” it is pronounced like a “k” instead of “tch.”

Double cc before an e or an i is pronounced “ch”, for instance, Ecce homo, pronounced “etchay”.

Double cc before an a, an o, or a u is pronounced “k”.

Sorry @Fauken, that was intended as a reply to @ThoughtfulMind, not to you!

Now I am sad! 😭 allright I’ll try to pronounce it the “k” way 😂 BTW do you have better pronunciation table which I could use instead of the one I’ve linked? Thanks

I’ve just been looking at the booklet @PBWY linked to. It’s the most complete explanation I’ve ever seen.

Umm thanks, but that loooong to just try to quickly find the right pronunciation 😂 but thank you anyway it will be helpful ☺️

How do I pronounce “peccatoribus”? Just like it’s spelled. 😜

Seriously: Concur with @Fauken, @PBWY, and @BartholomewB above. The PDF resource does look amazing. Another pronunciation resource I like a lot is PHONETICA LATINÆ
PS
I always pronounce the word “peccatoribus” as ”petchatoribus” which I found here
I see nothing at the linked page to indicate the soft pronunciation of CC?

Hahahah it is a lot, especially if you need a quick reference for just one word. But for generally studying Ecclesiastical Latin, it’s great. If it helps, pronunciations for the Ave Maria and specifically “peccatoribus” are on pages 43 & 44.
