As you are aware, blessed objects cannot just be thrown away (canon 1171). The general rule of thumb has been to either burn and bury the ashes or simply bury a blessed object that is no longer usable.
The basic idea is that what has been dedicated to God should be returned to God. Burning or burying is seen as similar to the way a person’s dead body is committed to the earth.
