I’m not sure which forum this question belongs in, and I realize that it’s a silly question, but I’m wondering if people underline/highlight their Bibles/CCCs. For whatever reason, I feel bad marking these books up with highlighters, but it would probably be useful when I’m trying to remember a certain verse. Any suggestions?

It is perfectly fine to mark in your Bible or Catechism. If a verse is that important to you, you should mark it.

I agree completely. It is perfectly fine to mark your Bible, as long as it assists you in understanding the Bible better. Also, if you have ever gotten a close look at Dr. Scott Hahn’s Bible as he and Jeff Cavins teach during the Our Father’s Plan Series, you can easily see that the Bible he uses during this particular series is VERY HIGHLY HIGHLIGHTED!!! The same goes for Mother Angelica’s Bible as well. 👍 Brother Bob Fishman also made a statement that it’s a good thing to do as well. So, if you mark your Bible you are surely in good company indeed!!!

You could also consider buying an inexpensive PDA and downloading the free bible software and bible version of your choice from Olivetree.com. Some bibles must be purchased while others are free. The Catholic Douay Rheims can be downloaded for free.

You can electronically highlight passages in your PDA bible and also bookmark passages and do various searches. The PDA is small and light and makes a great portable device for reading scripture anytime and anywhere. This is one way to save your traditional bible from being marked with a highlighter. Another alternative is to have two bibles. Highlight in one and leave the other clean and marker free.

Mine have loads of underlining and writing in the margines. A real mess actually. :o

I recall reading, or hearing someone say, that we usually underline the things we agree with; and that it would be best if we went back and read all the parts we hadn’t underlined!!

Doesn’t highlighting bleed through the pages (Bible pages are pretty thin)?

You can always use a pencil if you feel more comfortable with it. Then you can use colored pens if you want a reference to be more permanent. 👍

I’ve never been able to write in my books, including the Bible. Instead, I use small post-it tabs to mark the pages, then write the bible passage and any notes on a small piece of paper and stick it in the pages. It definitely takes more time than highlighting/underlining. I should probably work on getting over that particular issue. 😃

Coming from a protestant background, most all my Bibles (I have a TON) are highlighted and/or written in at some point. It helps me study, plus I like to underline my favorite verses (please don’t confuse that with picking and choosing verses).

There are dry highlighters made especially for Bibles. They are available online and at Christian bookstores. I have used them for years. You can get a set that is refillable and then you will have the holders forever and can just refill when necessary.

:heaven: :harp:
