How do YOU recieve Communion?

I have taken communion from a deacon and will before a layperson. I prefer a priest since his hands are consecrated.
I guess this is my standard question, no deacons there? Deacons are ordinary ministers of Holy Communion.

This is simply not true regarding the first eight centuries of the Mass. Here’s another thread from CAF debunking that very myth.

Here’s another excellent article about reception of Holy Communion:

I got the information from the Catholic Book of Facts by Bart Tesoriero, Aquinas Press 2008.

In the church I grew up in (Anglican), in the hand and kneeling was customary. I once attended a different parish, they were doing everyone on the tongue and honestly, it really startled me to see it and distracted me. It’s not that I opposed it, it was just uncomfortable to be surprised by it.

Easter Vigil will be my first Roman Catholic communion. I haven’t decided what I will do.

Then you haven’t even read all the way through this thread, much less through the other ones on this forum or hundreds and thousands of other commentaries in other places.
Oh yes, I have. The “insistence” I see is insistence on following what the Church says is allowed. As opposed to saying we know better.

Gratefully 🙂
:clapping:
AMEN!
Well I am normally the EMHC at my parish, when I am not I prefer to sit on the same side, the priests alters his side, so I can’t control that. I always genuflect and receive on the tongue. I feel it is a personal preference. I just prefer not to touch The Lord as my hands aren’t clean enough for Him
.
I had this attitude until it dawned on me that if I should receive on the tongue from the priest or deacon because my hands are “unclean”, then why was I distributing Holy Communion to others with “unclean hands” as an EMHC??? Now I receive in the hand after a profound bow from the priest, deacon or EMHC.

…Say!
In the dark?
Here in the dark!
Would you, could you, in the dark?

I would not, could not,
in the dark.

Would you, could you,
in the rain?

I would not, could not, in the rain.
Not in the dark. Not on a train,
Not in a car, Not in a tree.

Are you sure you are posting on the right thread, clem456?

Ahhh. My child got ahold of my account…

I’d like to see Jim Carrey answer this question.

Stops 10 pews back, does triple forward sommesault, slides up on his knees mouth open, priest drops host in his mouth in perfect timing.

It depends on the situation.

In the Roman Catholic church, I prefer on the tongue. However, if I’m a little under the weather, overly tired, or having trouble concentrating, I take it in the hand as I have more fear of the Body of Christ slipping off my tongue and landing on the ground. This has never happened, but I want to make sure that it doesn’t. In some cases, I feel I have more control of protecting the Bread of Life by holding it in my hand and controlling it as I put it in my mouth. Strange to some of you, I’m sure, but that’s the way I feel.

In the Byzantine Rite, I take both elements together from the spoon as is their tradition.

Under species of bread, on the tongue from priest or deacon only, except when a priest or deacon is nor available. I change to whatever line the priest is at.

Under species of wine, only by intinction in those few parishes where it is available in that manner.

Thank you for saying “Receive” It is probably just me, but it really irritates my eyes and ears when I hear or see “Take” Communion.

I receive with love in my heart and the Eucharist in my hand.

I am uncomfortable behaving outside the norm so I receive in the hand.

The Blessed Eucharist is distributed by the priest always but the Precious Blood is distributed by EMHC’s so I receive from them.

Every part of me would prefer to receive on the tongue but I am just unwilling to make a spectacle of myself by acting outside the norm…

Or responding to people telling them they are less reverent because of how they receive.:(. Actually each time I serve as an EMHC…I would say maybe 2 or 3 receive on the tongue…figuring high.

I always consider it a special blessing if I get a priest…but it doesn’t bother me to receive from an EMHC…I’m certainly not going to do the row shuffle and cut to receive only from a priest.

JoelEatMilo;10436390:
Do you wash your hand before
receiving?

I only ask because if one is taking these steps out of respect for the real presence of our Lord wouldn’t it make sense to wash ones hand before receiving? **The priest washes his hands before touching the consecrated host. He does this during Mass not before. **Think of all the things one touches before receiving; the pew, missals, doors etc.

I’m not trying to be critical just a genuine question. I have never seen anyone lick their hand after receiving.

BTW : I receive on the tongue while kneeling.

No.

This is not correct. the priest does not wash his hands.

The priest ritually purifies his hands.

I am an altar server. I pour the water on the priests hands - fingers actually - and the water may or may not touch all or some of the fingers he uses to handle and consecrate the Eucharist. That part of the Mass is called the Lavabo, and it is a ritual purification with a spiritual action. It has zero to do with removing germs or dirt.

The EMHC who use the hand sanitizer before distribution probably have cleaner hands than the priest.

Wash me from my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins.

The Lavabo is a ritual with a theological and spiritual meaning - cleansing of sins. The Lavabo has nothing to do with physical cleanliness or washing.

I don’t wash my hands before recieving. I do exactly what the priest does. I pray the prayer of St. Ambrose before reception of the Eucharist, asking God to cleanse me of my sins.

I don’t think you would make a spectacle of yourself…as I said in my previous post, there are very few that receive on the tongue at ours parish…but I think nothing of it if they do. Really! Do what your heart tells you.

…and hopefully in a state of grace. 👍

Whether I bow, genuflect, recieve on the toung or in the hand, kneel or stand is between me and God. As long as it is within the rules, how I recieve Jesus is between me and Jesus.
