How do you "season" a new frying pan?

I just bought a new T-Fal pan, and the instructions say to season it with oil. So, do I heat the pan and then rub a thin layer of oil over it? Do I put the oil in first and then heat it? Or not heat it at all? Please excuse my ignorance, but I’ve never had to season a pan before.

What kind of pan is it? I remember my mother rubbing oil on her cast iron skillet after she washed it.

My husband (:o yes, my husband) washes the pan, then puts a drop or two of oil in the pan and rubs it around with a papertowel.

Of course, cast iron is treated in a totally different way.

Oil the whole interior, then heat it for a while, then wash out. The oil should not be smoking,

Not much different, just never use soap to clean it. Just scrub with hot water…(cast iron…)

What is the T-Fal made of? Depends on this, I’d think…

With my cast iron, I’ve heated then oiled, I’ve oiled then heated…
Works great; just NEVER soap. Can barely lift it, but…😛

Right, but you can use soap on T-Fal.

You can also use salt on cast iron. To clean it, that is.

to season a cast iron frying pan you oil it wipe the excess off with a paper towel heat oven to 350 put pan in oven when it reaches that tempture and turn off oven. leave it for a few hours and will be seasoned

I’d try that outdoors, on a grill. too much smoke.

the real seasoning comes from never cleaning it.

It’s not a cast iron pan. T-fal is a non-stick coating, like Teflon.

If you go to the t fall website, there is a FAQ section. I’m using my phone so I don’t know how to post a link.

One of them gives instruction on how to do it.

I don’t have a t fall. I have a circulon pan and no clue if I should season it:o. I guess I’ll look it up.

👍👍

Would love to season this way, but alas, no grill…

If t-fal is a no stick, if it’s anything like a teflon, then I betcha one should NEVER heat it without food, never cook above medium heat; oil would be insufficient. I have heard that by 2015, something will change with teflon that will change its components to reduce if not eliminate its toxicity. Maybe teflon will be eliminated!!

Why not use soap? We cleaned ours with the rest the dishes (usually last). But then it wasn’t uncommon for the frying pans to be used three times a day either.

Soap shouldn’t be used on cast iron pans because it removes the seasoning.

T-Fal, Teflon etc. pans are a different story, though.

I just found out that my husband uses soap, ON cast iron. He has for years. And never a problem. Then he uses salt and a papertowel to scrub it. Then a good rinse, and into the oven to dry it. No it doesn’t taste like soap, no, it hasn’t rusted and yes, it is very well seasoned.

Our regular skillet, gets washed with soap a couple times a day. Once every other day or so, my husband wipes a little oil around it. He doesn’t bake the regular skillet. He simply dries it will a towel.

I used soap on CIS too, til told otherwise. No biggie, just had to reseason and/or regrease each time or depending on the food being cooked; and to avoid rust, put it in a warm, not hot oven to finish drying.
