What have you decided to believe about God? What attributes, if any, have you chosen to assign to God? Do you think of God as the First Cause, as the all–powerful creator, as the Master of Existence who can will matter into being? Or do you suppose God is finite in some respects?

What were the factors and influences that preceded your decision?

That is a complicated list of questions.

I’ll give it a shot…God is The First Cause of existence. God’s chief attribute is Love…“God is Love”.

God is revealed in humanity and through humanity God has expression in our world. God is best revealed in Jesus of Nazareth…“the express Image of His person.” Jesus reveals the nature and depth of the Love of God to humanity…“God with us”…our Immanuel.

Humanity posseses the “Seed of God”…the “Light Within”…“That of God in each of us.” It is our hands by which God moves to comfort and heal…it is by our voices God speaks peace…our feet are the only feet God has in our world to go where love and mercy need to find a witness.

I was raised in an evangelical fellowship…but I felt the “ethic” of being a Christian had been lost in “legalism”…“don’t drink”…“don’t dance”…“don’t go to movies”…“don’t use profanity”…“don’t purchase on Sundays”…I was taught these are the marks of a “true christian”…“Come ye apart and be separate”…but what I saw was bigotry for those of other faiths…bigotry for minorities…lack of a consistent ethic which called us beyond ourselves into the Light…to walk in the Light. I began a search and found my way among the Society of Friends.

Through Friend’s Worship and Practice I have found a faith that is not so concerned about what I “believe”…but that the “Truth” is expressed not through “dogma”…but through the daily of my life. Living in the Truth is not the same as believing such and such doctrinal statements…one of my favorite passages in scripture in in James letter, where he writes about showing our faith by our deeds…not claiming faith without deeds…“faith” isn’t something we believe…faith is something we do…I was “liberated” from the strictures of “doctrine and dogma” and given freedom to "walk in the Light’.

I found if I want to know what God looks like…to look no farther than next door…if I need to know what God wants me to do…I need inquire no farther than the person in need I come across.

With failings by the hundred…I experienced Grace…astounding amazing grace…I don’t have to change the whole world…I just have to impact the small part of the world in which I live…for when I fail…I rest in the mercy of God…“His mercy is made new each morning.”

I don’t believe anything about God - rather, I believe what God Himself has revealed about Himself. In His Word, He has revealed He is One; He is Love and Mercy, Justice and Holiness - in a word, Goodness itself; and in Him are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Hi Publisher,

Thanks a lot for choosing to take the time to put together an informative and personal response. I have much respect for the Society of Friends and I very much enjoyed reading your composition.

Grace and peace,

Well, my reality structure is very broad, which means that I can remember highly unusual experiences. Most people are like Darren in the TV series Bewitched, they do not cope very well with experiences that would provide insight into the nature of God.

When I was very young I asked Him a question. He answered my question. So, I know that I can ask Him questions and He can answer my questions. However, after getting that first response I have not asked any more questions.

Beyond that time maybe a few years, a situation arose in which my life was in immediate danger I in a rather unusual way asked for His help. He removed me from the situation.

Three hours later He sent me back to earth, about 25 feet from where I left.

I was only ten years old then, and did not give a lot of thought to what had happened. When I was about thirty years old I began to think seriously about spirituality. So, I began to think that I should seek to have the same kind of experience.

I looked into the new testament, and old testament and found the things written about that kind of experience of being physically delivered.

Well, it seemed to me that Jesus had spoken of entering the kingdom of God in this way, when he said that we are to go without anyone knowing where we went, and come without anyone knowing from where we have come. To go and come, like the wind does, being reborn each time of the spirit.

So, I recommitted myself to the simple words from God’s son in the gospels, and did on several occasions pray to be moved at various times and places, and at those times and places God our father did move me.

However, I have not yet found anyone who understands God through simmilar experience. I would hope to have a companion who shares in being moved by our father, from place to place.

Well, I exist only because this is where he has sent me, I still haven’t asked another question. God is love, when you feel love, you are with God. With the feeling of love that you have ask him…

In His yeshua,

Vincent

In all honesty, I would never be so self-centered in trying to define God, nor would I ever be so close-minded in saying that He does not exist. I just choose to expect the unexpected even if that gets me into Hell… assuming that it exists.

What influenced me to take this position was te behavior of the believers around me. People of the same denomination from the same local church would have different views about God-- who He was/is, what He looks like, how He acts, among others.

I realized that God was just the personification of that person’s personal views and their own ideas, influenced by elements of Church teaching and one’s varied biblical interpretations. It’s just you to the power of a billion-- you in the greatest and most divine entity you could imagine yourself being.

This is done in a way that makes God go from entity to idea.

There are so many interesting, age-old debates about this. Some people maintain a sort of positivism (“God is love” “God is this”, “God is that”, etc). I am not so sure that this is where I am philosophically. I suppose I don’t know where I am, and only hints of where I am not.

How do you decide what to believe about God? Well…why does it have to be like that?

A linguist of some level of notoriety (his name escapes me right now) who has worked for many years in the Brazilian Amazon with a specific tribe has had the experience of coming to “disbelieve” in God through his fieldwork. You see, one of the largest linguistics institutes in America is the SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics), which is the linguistic research arm of an Evangelical Protestant missionary organization. Traditionally it has been priests and other religious men who have done the work of learning and transcribing the minority languages of the world since such work is necessary to preach the gospel. I suppose SIL sees itself as continuing in that tradition. Anyway, so this linguist is affiliated with SIL on his first few trips out into the Amazon. Ostensibly there to do “linguistic research”, but also for converts, one of the first things he does is sets about learning appropriate religious vocabulary and preaching to the tribe. I have no idea of the success he had, but it must not have been much, because the people were completely baffled by this idea of God. They heard the story of God as it is told in the Bible and asked, “Okay, we’re willing to believe in this stuff, but…where is He? Where is this ‘God’ who does all this great stuff for us?”

Apparently after years of this sort of question, the linguist in question began to doubt his own faith. If you don’t know that God is anywhere…well…then how do you know that God is anywhere? My atheistically-minded colleagues love this story, and I do too, but for an entirely different reason than they do.

Think about it for a minute or two…How did the Amazonians decide what to believe about God? DID they decide? They had been given this story by a missionary linguist, but their own way of knowing could not determine its veracity. They did not reject God or embrace God, only wondered how they could know Him, which I assume is the question that religion is supposed to answer in the first place! It’s a paradox, that’s for sure. We are humans, we have questions, and we have religions and faiths to guide us. Yet they can only take us so far, because the most certain knowlege of God is in the experience of Him (the “seeing”, for the Amazonians). The Bible is, after all, a record of things experienced.

I don’t know that I honestly have any better way of knowing what I believe about God than the Amazonians did. Yes, I know, the Catechism, Tradition, Scripture…I certainly have MORE ways of knowing what I should believe, but I don’t know that they lead me to be able to say anything terribly conclusive about what God is or isn’t. I think it is rather obvious that religion can’t answer these questions, because we’re all here on Earth, poking away to ideas much larger than ourselves. Whatever or whoever God is or isn’t, I have to believe that God is perfect in all His attributes, whatever they may be (and on this point I would agree with the EO way of reasoning that it is best to say that God isn’t X, Y, Z, because it is much harder to say what He is, and it does seem rather limiting).

Do you see now, Mick?! Do you see now why He has said that He is “I AM”? Because if you are a human and you think about these things for long enough, that is basically what you are left with. Also, it gives you a headache. :o

God is.
