How do you think society would respond to automated roads?

I’m still waiting for us as a society to realise we are too safety obsessed.

Why? Computers process information a lot faster than we can. A computer has faster response times. And a computer will never decide to have a heart attack, or a joyride and run a train of the tracks like one person did a while back.
Let’s look at other modes of transit. Trains are close to what you speak of. Many have Positive Train Control to reduce accidents and eventually all will. On the far end, airplanes have autopilot but have little to prevent the pilots from doing anything yet airlines are one of the safest modes of transit.

Instead of controlling the cars I say we improve the driver.

Your faith in technology being foolproof is naive at best. Computers do have critical failures and suffer from cyber attacks and viruses.

Safety is good. Standards and Codes are good. Most accidents and catastrophes can be prevented or mitigated by investing money properly and following approved practices.

But i do believe that computers can greatly reduce risk.
As it is, driving is not what I would call risky. Anyway, some amount of responsibility is essential for normal human development.

Your analysis reminds me of the otherwise healthy people who want everything to be anti-bacterial and sanitized. Those people apparently don’t know that the human body needs a certain amount of bacteria and viruses to keep the immune system healthy and strong.

Ignorant people also forget that they’re exposed to a variety of microorganisms through dust carried in the air. Even an obsessively clean person will be adequately inoculated. 🙂

I don’t enjoy driving. My car is small, the roads are bad, and people’s driving annoys me.

Anyways, let’s say that I’m taking my automated car to the grocery store. But, I need to turn around and stop by the gas station for an emergency bathroom break 😱 Normally, I’d pull into a driveway or turn around in a parking lot. However, what will my automated car do? I’ll tell ya’, it’s gonna circle the block and I’m gonna be facing a terrible situation!

No thanks, I’m driving myself where I want.

We’ve seen it all before. When traffic lights were introduced people are uneasy about it. When ATMs were introduced tellers complain.

It’ll be the same here with driverless cars. Let them complain and so on and find faults and so on. It will stimulate improvement so that it’s safer as a result. But no one can stop the future. It will happen.

There will be driverless cars and that’s great. But I don’t see the elimination of drivers anyone soon. Keep in mind there is a lot of rural and private property that isn’t suitable for automated cars.

Automated ATV’s and Motorcycles…
