Thanks for the clarifications! I will ask my few remaining questions soon (ya’ll have already answered most of them). At the moment I can’t.

which is perfectly fine to us. Looking forward to your questions,

I don’t think I would drink Holy water, it really isn’t meant for that purpose and should never be compared to receiving the Sacred Blood of our Lord. God Bless, Memaw
Drinking Holy Water is common in some traditions in the church and there is certainly nothing wrong with it. In the Byzantine Rite, it is the custom after the Great Blessing of the Waters on Theophany for the faithful to consume some of the blessed water. We each approach with a cup, fill up and drink away! Then we take some home to continue to consume it, use it in cooking, bless family members, etc. Consumption of Holy Water is integral to our use of it.

I didn’t say there was anything wrong with it, I just said I wouldn’t do it. Actually, I have never heard of it before. We don’t do that in the Latin Rite. Lourdes Water maybe, but that is not actually Holy water but considered miraculous water. I don’t think I would even drink that. God Bless, Memaw

I only know of one reference to “Holy Water” in the scripture.

It rather fascinating:

Numbers 5:17

If this is your opinion, there is nothing wrong with that. i just said that is not sinful or disrespectful to drink it, and that many drink it. but it is not necessary for salvation, though water blessed for the sick is consumed in the latin rite too.

I have never heard of water being Blessed, just for the sick either! God Bless, Memaw

see nos 43,46,47 and 52 in this site.
Formally reserved for religious orders, so no wonder I never heard of it. It has never been mentioned in any of the things I have ever read, heard , nor has any priest I have ever talked to mentioned it. Not common among the faithful that I know of. If it was Blessed for that reason I doubt they mean drink the Holy Water in the containers at Church. Not to sure how sanitary that would be. God Bless, Memaw

formerly, which means any priest can bless now.

it is not, tmk, kept in containers at the church but blessed in bottles. this is how it is done in my parish.

it is a sacramental.
you just have to sprinkle it in any way. no special prayers are needed. still, you can say any prayer if you want to.
if you can drink the body and blood of christ, you can drink holy water. again, there is no proper way.

if you are talking about blessing of homes and enthronement to the sacred heart, only a priest can do it.
Holy water or not you do not want to drink it. You do not know how long it has been since the water came out of a faucet. Water can carry water borne pathogens.

The practice I heard was to add a very small quantity to your food/drink. Still perhaps, it may be better to have your own bottle blessed. Simply fill it with water and take it to the priest.

Post 29 says ‘formally reserved’, not ‘formerly’. I’m a bit confused, as they mean different things.

Which is correct?
formerly.

i am extremely sorry for the error of mine and all the difficulty it has caused.

That would work. I have worked for a rural water company for years upon years so I have knee jerk reaction in regard to safe water.

**
dont drink water from the containers at the church!**

in my church, one of the priests blesses ordinary bottled drinking water in honour of our lady of lourdes.

I’ve posted a shorter version of this about once a week for a month under “Ask an Apologist” and I’m guessing that was the wrong place to do so. My mistake, if any apologists read this- sorry.

I have a bottle of holy water from Church I want to use to purify/sanctify/protect (not actually sure what the proper terminology is) the place I’m staying while up college. Is it appropriate for a layman rather than a priest to “sprinkle the holy water” for this purpose? How does one “sprinkle the holy water” (is there a specific way)? Are their certain prayers that need to be said while doing so? Lastly I read that St. Teresa of Avila actually drank the stuff. Is there a certain way to do that? I just don’t want to misuse the sacramental (is holy water a sacramental?) I struggle to articulate this without the proper terminology. If anyone could help me understand this, that would be great.
totally, yes:thumbsup:
