How do you watch TV?

Just know, thanks to our wonderful Senate and Congress and the TV Lobbyists that sometime in 2008, the current system of broadcasting TV programs will end and everyone in the United States is going to have to buy a High Definition TV set; even to be able to just see Local TV.

I’m sure the price of HDTVs will go down a few years after the crunch, so I’m going to wait and just watch shows I’ve taped.

There is almost nothing to watch on it anyways. TV has really “gone down the tubes.”

This is not true, but it is a common misconception. TV will switch from “analog” signals to “digital” broadcast signals. From a technical standpoint all HDTV sets are “digital” but not all “digital” TV sets are High Definition.

HDTV is digital High Definition. Resolutions are 1280x720 or 1920x1080
EDTV is digital, but not High Definition, it is Enhanced Definition. Resolution is 720x480
The difference between EDTV to HDTV is remarkable, and EDTV has a clearer and crisper picture than analog TV.

I don’t know what standard analog definition is, but it is below EDTV. You will be able to use your analog TV sets if you get a ‘digital conversion box’

BTW as for pricing, last week Office Depot was selling 32" widescreen Flat Panel LCD HDTVs for $499. 👍 However, the HDMI cable to connect it to your cable/satellite box cost another $79 :eek: And you need a special HD cable/satellite box with associated service, or you need to be able to pick up over the air HD broadcast signals.
 
I checked “other” because I do not have a TV hooked to an antenna, cable or sattelite. We simply do not watch it.

Silly thing is that we don’t watch very much TV, we do rent movies and watch as a family. I’m a sci-fi geek and like to watch FIREFLY and all the various STAR TREK series shows, but I have many of those on DVD. Both my wife and I watch The History Channel, Discovery, and some of the HD channels. My daughter is allowed to watch the Disney Channel on the weekends, often she prefers to read. I tune into EWTN occasionally. Of the 250 channels we get, we probably actually watch only a handful. I tend to have the TV on in the bedroom when I read, so I only half-watch it then.

Typing this makes me wonder why I pay for all those channels :confused:

I’m in a similar boat. Like I said, I don’t watch much TV as far as broadcasting goes, but I’m a total home theater geek.

HDTV, 5.1 surround, Wii, Xbox 360, upconverting DVD player, HD DVD player, PS2, Dreamcast, the works.
 
I realized that I almost never watch TV, so I’m in the middle of cancelling my cable. Save some cash, you know. It should be off in a few days.

You forgot a choice: None. We don’t have TV. Just distracts the kids and most of it, even the commercials are just perverse anymore. We have a TV, but only watch DVDs on it that are not full of immorality.
You can also download some TV shows from the internet, so that’s another choice that should have been on the poll. 😉 We watch old Looney Tune cartoons and EWTN online.
 
We have cable. But, I RARELY watch anything that hasn’t been recored on my TiVo box. I hate commercials.

The only things I watch regularly, are Lost, CSI (original), and Cleveland Indians baseball.

I don’t even watch movies all that much, when I do, it takes me 2-3 sittings to get through a single movie.
 
Cable/digital – only Comcast Expanded Basic service carries EWTN. Which I watch at least half the time I’ve got the tube on. Rest of the time … must admit I’m a reality TV show junkie!!
 
I mostly watch old Star Trek episodes on DVD but other than that I watch on tv whatever I feel like watching at any given time.

I know I’m pretty much a sci-fi junkie.

I’m wondering why, when someone like Gene Roddenbury, the creator of Star Trek is an atheist, we Catholics are drawn to his shows? The very same is true with Josh Weadon, the creator of the sci-fi cult-classic FIREFLY, is also an atheist, but he has many Catholic fans.

What is it about science fiction that attracts us?​
