Hey everyone. How does a person learn to stop complaining so much? A friend of mine told me that you can tell your complaints to God and I do that. I think you can also just offer it up. But what do you do about the bad mood that it puts you in when you can’t vent?

The solution to complaining is thanksgiving. Every time we feel the need to “vent” we should find something in our lives to be thankful for. And in today’s world? Plenty for all of us to thank God for. We need only to watch the evening news to become aware of our blessings.
When looking outwards, we lose some of those self-centered “me” feelings.
My priest always says that no matter what you pray for, no matter how much you need to pour your heart out to God, you should always open with “Thank You Lord”.
God bless you.

Maybe you can try venting by putting it all down in writing. Don’t leave out anything, write and write and write everything you need to complain about.

Then write a long list of things you are grateful for. My spiritual director had me write 25 different things a day for a MONTH! I thought it couldn’t be done, but it became easy after the first week. Good luck and God bless you.

And you can also burn the bad thing’s list afterwards. I always fealt the bad feeling go away when I saw the words burning away 🙂

Hate the sin of detraction and bite your tongue when you wish to say anything negative about somebody else. Practice meekness, patience, pity and mercy. Remember that vengeance is God’s, not yours. Be thankful for the good things that the person who offended you does and look at your own self for things to criticize. Focus on your own sins and defects and when somebody offends you, rather that speaking critically about the person to vent, work on the virtue that the other person has lacked in. And most important, always remember that there is very, very great virtue and merit gained by suffering wrongs patiently in silence. God bless you.

This is a pretty good suggestion and I thank you for it. But what if I cannot find anything at all to be thankful about in the situation that is making me angry or irritated? Also, often times when I watch the evening news, I find a lot more things to complain about than to be thankful about. There is just way too much bad news anymore.

I think it goes like this. Say your boss comes in a yells at you for no reason at all, it was completely unwarranted. You go home to your spouse and want to vent about the situation and complain about your boss who embarrassed you and your coworkers who didn’t defend you, etc. But instead, use the opportunity to remind yourself of your blessings. In this case: “Dear Lord, thank you that I have a job that pays the bills (or that I usually like, or that allows me to live in the city that I want). Thank you that I have a husband (friend/parent/cat) that usually listens to me vent. Thank you that my voice works well and that I am able to express my thoughts clearly. Thank you for the opportunity to suffer and practice humility. Please help me to appreciate my blessings more.”

It will work for any situation. When someone we love dies, we can be thankful for having known them. When the car breaks down, we can be thankful that we have the means to repair it, or an alternative mode of transportation. When we find out we’re ill, we can be thankful for the doctors who treat us or the friends who console us…

Wait. You don’t have a roof over your head? You don’t have access to the internet to chat with us?
You don’t have reliable transportation?
It doesn’t have to directly correspond to the stuff you are mad about.
It should **counteract **your anger.
Glass half full? Or half empty and life is horrible.
Could be way worse. Always.

Holly, my Spiritual Director told me the most common cause of unhappiness is the inability to control the person, the situation, the world or whatever is in your path. I actually sought spiritual direction because I was so angry about politics. It was a fury of pretty substantial proportions. My SD really helped me understand that in reality there is very little we CAN control. We get frustrated because we are under the illusion that we are able to orchestrate world events, other peoples’ lives, politics or what songs the choir sings. He said when I get into a virtual vortex of fury, step back. Look at the situation and control what I can control. As to the rest, as the saying goes, “Let go and let God…”

The other thing was to avoid situations, TV shows or encounters that trigger this reaction. I basically quit watching the news. Why do I need to know about plane crashes a world away? Does knowing that some celebrity cheated on his wife help me in any way? Need to know…

Finally I would really consider what you are eating, your sleep patterns and the possible need for supplements. (I’m not a doctor but I play one on the internet :D) I found certain supplements were very helpful in maintaining a better mood. In fact many people say gee you’re never in a bad mood or depressed. Well not anymore!

I’m sorry but I think you misunderstood me. I was asking about what I can do in situations where I cannot find anything positive in a specific situation. Let’s say that my boyfriend and I got in an argument and I am angry about it and want to vent to someone and cannot see anything at all that is positive in the situation. How am I supposed to turn my complaint in to gratitude if I can’t find anything at all about the argument to be grateful about?

“Dear Lord, thank you for my boyfriend. Thank you that we care enough about each other to argue. Thank you for this time apart from each other to reflect on our relationship. Thank you for teaching me to be more selfless and giving; thank you for the opportunity to compromise. Please bless our future spouses, whoever they are, and help us each to grow in holiness so that we might be prepared to get married when the time comes.”

I didn’t misunderstand. I said that the thanking doesn’t have to directly correlate to your complaint.
You are saying that your boyfriend has absolutely no redeeming qualities?
As nodito said, “thank you for teaching me how to compromise”, Also, how to put others first, and how to prevent a fight from escalating into words that each of us may regret.

I suppose your question ought to be:
How do I make something positive out of negative events?
🤷

Whenever something bad happens to me, I just imagine that somewhere someone else had the same pain I have, though the circumstances are not the same. That is what I must not focus on: the circumstances of the pain. Instead, I focus on the pain itself, which is something we all share.

You will deceive yourself into believing that if the people, circumstances, and events had been different, your pain would not exist. This might be partly true, but the deeper truth is that the situation which brought about your pain was simply the form in which you came in touch with the human condition of suffering. Your pain is the concrete way in which you participate in the pain of humanity.

Paradoxically, therefore, healing means moving from your pain to the pain…[R]eal healing comes from realizing that your own particular pain is a share in humanity’s pain. That realization allows you to forgive your enemies and enter into a truly compassionate life. That is the way of Jesus, who prayed on the cross: “Father forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23: 34). Jesus’ suffering, concrete as it was, was the suffering of all humanity. His pain was the pain. (Henri Nouwen)

And it is weird, but the source of irritation and distress for me becomes a source of joy, because the pain then becomes a reminder that I am not alone.

Think of all the graces you will lose out on by venting your bad feelings about another person. There is nothing more sanctifying than suffering patiently and silently, Holly. God bless you.

A lot of excellent advice there. 👍

To the first paragraph of LisaA’s post, I would add that you might be happier if you focus on your objectives rather than your expectations of how you will get there. Rarely do things work out as we expect. If we tend to focus on expectations, we will be disappointed. If we think more in terms of objectives, we can be resilient; if things don’t turn out the way we expected, we continue to work toward our objectives, choosing a different approach if necessary.

This is loosely based on something I heard from Jeff Yalden, a youth motivational speaker who recently spoke at the high school in my town.

I would agree and disagree. Sure, we all get angry at politics and world events. And for most people, clicking off the set is fine, although, even here, I would argue that we need to be informed to be responsible citizens. How could we vote for better leaders if we don’t know what’s going on? But, more importantly, what if you feel that you, yourself, are called to change things? That you need to inform the public about causes that are important to you? This is not so much ***control ***as it is activism. I think justifiable anger is the first step in changing the status quo. Being passive is fine if avoiding anger is the main objective, but not if your goal is change. There would be no Lincolns or MLKs or Gandhis is people remain content with unacceptable things.

Holly, I think you need to look deep within and see what your bottom line objective really is. God bless.

Ummm, no. I never said that my boyfriend has no redeeming qualities. That is a complete and total misinterpretation of what I said. He has a LOT of redeeming qualities.

Here’s an idea.

List all complaints on paper; this is optional.

Then say your own version of the following, and give is expression to show Jesus your heartfelt pain having to deal with these things:

"Jesus my life is really difficult. I have this friend whose dog keep rooting up my geraniums. And not only that, they are saying it’s really my cat but I know my cat doesn’t do these things. Oh yeah, and I’m like only one day late on my term paper for World History, and the teacher took off 10% which really hurt a lot because I thought the teacher liked me and I told him it was going to be late.

"Oh yeah, another thing. Check this out Jesus, I was in the bank yesterday and I was trying to cash this check and that woman was so rude it was unbelievable. Sometimes I wonder if we’re teaching kids anything at all about manners. Would you believe she refused to cash it for me just because I forgot my ID? She knew who I was I know she did because I’ve been in there before and I had my ID then.

"And you know Lord, my Mother-in-Law is so annoying. She keeps calling us last minute and asking us for favors to take her here or there and if we can’t do it right now without even thinking about it, she says “never mind” and then calls relatives out of town and asks them to come get her and take her to the doctor because “my kids that are right here in town won’t help me” I swear she lives to make us miserable. I see no other point in her life at all.

"I would have been here sooner, but that stupid construction on I-99 was insane. You’d think they’d have two lanes open at this time of day but guess what? Yup, only one lane, and not only that we had to stop for equipment I don’t know maybe three times? Is it a sin to pray for the city’s engineers to all get fired? And you know, I can’t even believe they don’t make that right lane from south Oakwood onto 2nd street a right-turn only lane? Really, Lord. I have to wait at least 30 extra seconds behind some idiot in an SUV, probably didn’t even need to be on the road, who was going straight so I couldn’t turn until the light was green. That SUV knew very well the left lane was entirely open, and did it on the day I most needed to save time getting to my poker game.

"So Jesus, while you’re just hanging around there, I figured you’d have time to hear me. I don’t understand why the world Your Father made is as bad as it is, and truly I am very grateful. But we Christians have a great load to bear, in the 21st century. There are so many things in our life today that we have to worry about; sometimes I think “why couldn’t I have been born back in Jesus’ day, when things were so much simpler?”

"And then I finally realize, “I am grateful for my life. If it weren’t for the Lord and His world, I wouldn’t be here at all. This is a recording. Beep.” And I think, "well I don’t understand how God thinks all this is to bless us, but with Your help, I hope You and God can do something about the conditions I have to live in.

“So anyway Jesus thank you, and now I pray to the Father that we have some progress on these issues, in Your name.” Amen.

And then read your entire script, looking at this:

That is a powerful image. I often meditate looking at a crucifix.

Holly, as many have said, the key is thanksgiving, gratitude and recognizing how blessed you are. Please try these and I believe you will find the relief you’re looking for.

God bless you.
