One of my friends wants to know more about Catholicism and asked me what it is that it takes for a saint to become a saint? I wasn’t sure how to reply because I’ve never understood it or really had it explained to me before.

A saint becomes a Saint because he lived a life of heroic virtue. The canonization process used to determine this has varied over the centuries. The current process is explained here.

– Mark L. Chance.

We are all called to be saints. Simply stated, a saint on anyone who is in heaven. When one is canonized as a saint, this is merely the Church stating that this particular person is indeed in heaven. It is a good practice to read on the lives of the saints, particularly those of our own time, with whom we have a more contemporary understanding. There are many who were canonized in the 20 century and this century, whose heroic lives can teach us much about faith. Any good Catholic book store would have many such books which you could purchase and read.
God bless
