How does annointing of the dead differ from annointing of the sick?

What is anointing of the Dead? Is it anointing of the sick, only to a recently deceased person? Or is it something else?

Hi Mark,

Sacraments are not administered to the dead. Sometimes the anointing of the sick is administered, conditionally, to a person whose death is not certain.

The women followers of Jesus went to his tomb to annoint him. I want to know if annointing the dead has any graces associated with it as annointing of the sick does.

Thanks. We were posting at the same time a minute ago so I didn’t see your response.

Anyway, I read in Pontiff that JPI was annointed possibly several hours after his death.

I believe that the anointing of the dead Christ was a traditional burial custom at the time.

As Lizaanne has said, the anointing for Jesus was a Jewish custom. SinceJewish traditions didn’t bestow Grace, I would say that this is much different from the anointing of the Sick, which is meant to bestow forgiveness and maybe even healing Graces.
