How does EC relate to Orthodox?

From the angle of trying to understand why Catholics would not want to try to convert Orthodox? If there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church, it seems like in charity, Catholics would want to bring others into the Church?

RC has become more accepting and recognizing of Orthodoxy,that they are real churches with true sacraments and offer the path of Salvation to souls

The two churches have now come to agree not to try and convert eachother or for ‘uniatism’ to take place

Whether we agree with it or like it or not,the eastern and western churches will by the grace of God draw closer and closer to each other to sort out their differences,

All these old anathemas against each other will be overcome

The Pope and Patriarch already lifted the anathemas of 1054 last century

My Latin isn’t great but I have heard a better translation of Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus is “there is no safety outside the Church.” Seeing as how the Catholic Church views Orthodoxy as an imperfect aspect of the Church, it seems that the CC does not believe the schism is enough to bring harm to the spiritual safety of the Orthodox faithful (especially considering most of the sacraments are considered to be valid).

That is one translation of salus, yes. It does also translate to “salvation”, though.

However, I don’t think that the Orthodox agree with the supremacy or infallibility of the Pope as outlined by Vatican I: “Hence we teach and declare that by the appointment of our Lord the Roman Church possesses a sovereignty of ordinary power over all other Churches, and that this power of jurisdiction of the Roman Pontiff, which is truly episcopal, is immediate to which ail, of whatsoever rite and dignity, both pastors and faithful, both individually and collectively, are bound, by their duty of hierarchical subordination and true obedience, to submit, not only in matters which belong to faith and morals, but also in those that appertain to the discipline and government of the Church throughout the world; so that the Church of Christ may be one flock under one supreme pastor through the preservation of unity, both of communion and of profession of the same faith, with the Roman pontiff.” (Pastor Aeternus, Ch. III; Denz. 1827) You imply that eventually there will be some sort of union of the Orthodox and Catholic. Do you think that the Catholic Church will give up on the belief of papal supremacy, or do you think that the Orthodox will accept it?

I just said in other words that the two churches are willing to continue to work together to work at overcoming the problems

Whether they will eventually come together again and when i dont know
But some progress at least has been made since last century

What Papal primacy means to a united church is an issue they know they have to work out and discuss,i dont know what will be the outcome of their discussions and dialogue

Hi all. Forgive me for my late response to this post; but I must say that if that’s what the Balamand Statement meant, then it has to be the most poorly-written document that has come out of that commission. Couldn’t they have said it more clearly? 🤷

Just a thought. If in the event that unity is achieved and Catholic and Orthodox become one Church in which case a Bishop from the Orthodox origin is eligible to become Pope just like any practicing Cardinals below the retirement age, I think the Orthodox may agree to the position of the Pope as we know it now.
