Does God judge us on the curve? And if so is the curve based on other people in our day and age? Or of all time? Or is there no curve and we must all answer to being judged based on a standard of holliness. Or based on how hard we try?

If judgement is by way of comparison to another human, it would certainly be Jesus to whom we are compared. For the Christian, this is a great hope.

Jesus describes how God judges souls in Matthew 25, verses 31-46.

God bless you

Well, I personally don’t picture judgement as occurring along a curve with the half of humanity that is the best going to Heaven and the half that is the worst going to Hell. I see judgment as being a very personal matter, even though, at the end of the world, our judgment becomes public. I think that we have to remember that we are being judged by a God Who knows our soul, and Who knows everything we ever thought and did. As a whole, the Bible provides a good insight into how God judges us, but I wouldn’t presume to know the exact formula. I just believe that faith has a role, as do works, virtue, and repentance.

I don’t see going to a Heaven as a competition where I have to run the race or beat out other people. Theoretically, I think that all people can go to Heaven, and I hope that everyone will go to Heaven.

Do your job.
Leave to God to do His.

So all I have to do is be honest, caring and forgiving. Go to church and I’m golden?

Well, being honest, caring, and forgiving can, at least for me, be harder than it sounds. What God wants from us is fairly simple to understand, and, on the surface, it sounds really easy to do, but sometimes we are our own worst enemies, and we don’t let ourselves be as honest, caring, and forgiving as we should be. The most important thing, though, is to be constantly trying to become holier–more honest, caring, and forgiving–than we are now and engaged in a deeper relationship with God. I think it is that continual growth, which is evidence of an earnest love of God and desire to engage in a meaningful relationship with Him forever, that is most pleasing to God.

I’m asking this because my sister says all she must do is go to mass on Sunday’s and holy days, keep Gods commandments, pray, be like Christ and she’s in. I wasn’t sure what was the truth.

There it is!

The other stuff is nice, too (in part, because it demonstrates how Christ-like one is).

To be like Christ is to sacrifice everything. He even says to give away everything you own and follow him. There is much to be said about serving money. How much time is spent earning money we don’t really need and that we don’t give to the poor verses how much time in prayer/mass. Where does that thought work into salvation?

All the money a person really needs in this day in the USA is about 20K or less.
And where does evangelization play in as well?

Thank you for this. It seems a wonderful meditation as we approach Holy Week.

If all we had to do to get into heaven was to be a nice guy, would Christ needed to have sacrificed himself in the first place? We need to be heroic in our levels of selfless love, and we have Christ’s example to follow. 🙂

We’re all judged very individually, but yes, we are held to different standards based on that individuality. A priest or a member of a religious order will be held to a different standard than a layperson, and so on. But with your soul on the line— who would be silly enough to say, “Well, I’m not being judged by Mother Teresa’s standards, so I can get away with doing x or not doing y.” One sin that holds people back is “not desiring heaven enough”.

So, yes, it’s technically true-- “all” you have to do is go to Mass on Sundays and holy days, keep God’s commandments, pray, and be like Christ. That is an enormously tall order, and anyone who thinks they can actually do all those is pretty foolish. Can you seriously be genuinely Christlike for five minutes in a row? What does it look like? What level of prayer is sufficient to grant you access to Heaven? Show me. Prayer is the development of a relationship with God. If we only spent thirty seconds in a day talking to or interacting with our spouse, or our best friend, would they think we valued our relationship with them? What about fifteen minutes? An hour? At what point do we get away with saying, “I’ve thought about you enough, God. Now it’s time for me to do whatever I feel like?” But isn’t that so often what we do? 😉

We are to be Judged justly and not unfairly

Some Catholics (and many other Christians, its not limited to Catholics) unfortunately believe that it is their mission to tell other people how to live their lives or how badly they’re broken or how much they’ve sinned. They claim “Oh but we have a moral duty to remind others of their sins and transgressions.”
While this goes on there’s some dirty little sin or secret these people have themselves that everyone overlooks. Because they do everything right or go through the motions. As if this gives them a right to call other people out for their sins. When this person has their own little perverted sin of their own that hasn’t been taken care of. Pretty hypocrtical. And everyone is guilty of it. Why I am guilty of it myself. Because we are all sinners.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:1-5:
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye."
So clearly if you see someone who has fallen on sin; don’t take the hypocritical route and proclaim to the world that they are a sinner to prove how righteous and upright you are. Because chances are that your personal sins are much worse than your brothers as Jesus spoke of.
Take things easy and slow. See to it that your qualified to speak on matters and examine your own sin first to make sure you are not being a self-righteous hypocrite.
And when you do go to speak to your brother. Do it gently with love. Berating them, singling them out, and making them feel worse about themselves is not too Christlike.
I know some here will disagree with me; but I’ve been around the block to see this. And I am guilty of this just as much as everyone else is.
This was from another thread.
