I often wonder how God leads a person to their spouse. I have never been in a relationship, but I have preferences when I think of who I would like to date. Does God use our preferences to lead us to the right person or do we limit God by having preferences? And, when I say preferences I’m talking about catholicity, age, ethnicity or education level for example. 😊

I think that He does use our preferences to help us find a spouse sometimes. I wouldn’t worry about having too strict preferences in your case, but don’t rely too much on them (except for religion, since that is a precept of the Church :)) since you might find someone who isn’t exactly what you expect but you still should marry them.

Somehow, if He wants you to be with a specific person, He will make opportunities for you to communicate with them. Some people meet in the most extraordinary of circumstances while others are just people who met at work.

Something of interest for those of you with faith…when I was dating my now wife she was at the time conflicted between a calling to become a nun versus a desire to eventually marry (me)…so she placed herself in the hands of Saint Theresa of The Little Flower and, unbeknownst to me, prayed a novena that she would see a specific sign that she was to continue to date me. It was almost winter so she decided upon a yellow rose as this sign…simply to make things difficult, I should imagine.

The novena ended on a Friday. Thursday night was the night my sister, who was my roommate at the time, would play pool because they gave all of the ladies roses. So of course she brought home a yellow one and had it prominently displayed upon the side counter…so naturally when I brought my date over to my place on Friday night to pick something up on our way out she felt she had her sign… 😉

Obviously I cannot comment on whether God led her to me or whether it was a splendid coincidence…but you may… 😉

I find stories of the married to vary quite a bit, so I don’t think God has a particular “way” that “works” for everyone.

I think God does lead us but He uses our free will and choices to guide us. I met my DH on our company softball team. He worked in a different building, but I was a friend of his college classmate, who also was on the team. She knew him well and thought we had a lot in common. When we went our for food and drinks after the game, she sort of placed us by each other. God knew I wanted a devout, Catholic husband who would agree with my wanting to be a SAHM eventually. We had some family of origin differences to work out, but the rest is history.

I was going to school 200 miles away from my home. He was going to a different school 350 miles away from mine, and doing an internship in a city 500+ miles away from his. We met at a professional conference in a totally different city during a point in time where my then-current-boyfriend of 2 years had broken up with me a few days before we left, and we hit it off enough to have a long distance relationship afterwards. My on-campus boyfriend had the habit of getting commitment-shy every Feb or March and breaking up for a couple of weeks, but after a little distance, he was always happy to come back, and I was always happy to take him back. This time, I wasn’t really sure-- I was getting tired of his immaturity, and I was intrigued by the prospect of being with an older, more stable guy. (I was in undergrad; he was a grad student.) When I got back, I sat in the audience while my on-campus boyfriend did a demonstration for his club for the uni’s spring festival-- and the girl he was “just friends with” and “totally didn’t want a relationship with” was there to help him with his equipment afterwards, which was why I had come that day. He didn’t see me, but I was given the opportunity to see the look he gave her-- which he previously had only given to me. That gave me the courage to break it off for good with him and pursue this new path.

So, in my case, God was able to take someone out of a long-term relationship that had existed since Day 1 of Freshman Orientation, free me up to pursue a relationship with a new person, overcome the obstacle of us bouncing around five major cities in Texas, and make it last for 2 years’ worth of long-distance relationship. This year is our 15th anniversary. Because it’s a mixed marriage-- I’m strongly Catholic, and he’s not-- there have been occasional major bumps coming from that, and I wonder if I ought to have looked harder for someone with a more similar background. But my mom once told me out of the blue, “I have a plant which hadn’t bloomed in 20 years, but it bloomed for your wedding. And that was my sign from God.” And so I get back to work on the path God has led me to and do my best. 🙂

Is it weird to find a certain type of person very attractive? For example, is it extremely odd to want a bi-racial marriage?

It is not odd at all. Many people idealize someone with looks different than theirs–the brown-eyed person who wants to find someone with striking blue eyes, the blonde who wants to find red-head or a raven-haired brunette, the short one who wants someone tall, the curly-haired one who wants someone with straight hair, or vice versa on any of that. Maybe it is nature’s way of preparing us to leave our families or an expression of some inner longing to really be out on our own–who knows? Just be prepared to set that aside, if the reason arises. If you can say, “I was looking for a red-head, but that was before I met you. When I met you, I knew I’d want you if you were bald. It is you I love, and I do not care what you do with your hair.”

On considering how to find a spouse, I’d give these two things. The first is scriptural:
*All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil. *Matt. 6:32-34

The other is “folk wisdom,” I guess:
Don’t marry for money. Hang around rich people, and marry for love.

The second is a tongue-in-cheek way of saying you ought to associate with the entire group that you want to belong to and choose a spouse there with his or her own unique merits that arouse your natural affection. If you want to find someone for whom the Catholic faith is important, make lots of acquaintances and spend your time working with other Catholics. This is how someone can recognize you as also being someone who values your faith.

I know a person who, in his head, wanted to marry a Greek girl-- there was an actress in a movie that was his “ideal”. In life, he always carried a torch for Jewish woman who was married to, then divorced from, a mutual friend. He ended up marrying an overweight redhead. 🙂

We can always have our mental images we’re attracted to for a spouse, for a career, for whatever— but how often are we surprised by what happens in reality. We all pursue what we’re attracted to-- but the important stuff to be attracted to is what’s in someone’s heart and soul.

Remember if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. 😉

Often times, I think we limit God with our preferences. Limiting ourselves based on Catholicity is a prudentially good decision to make and will spare yourself a considerable deal of suffering, and safeguard your children. Age also makes sense. If you’re a younger man that wants a family, marrying a woman in her 40s is going to be problematic, plus for either gender, you’re going to be a widow in your 50s or 60s if you marry somebody a lot older than you. Education can also make sense to some extent, in so far as it reflects the work ethic of the person, although I don’t think somebody with a doctorate and somebody with a bachelors that charged straight into a career would necessarily be much of an issue. Again, education is a question because of what it says about the person’s work ethic and character.

Of course, these are markers of good judgement, but not something God is absolutely bound by. You can have good marriages that fall outside these norms.

I think I am a romantic person, but I am not a believer in a soul mate. I think every person was created in the image of God and possesses a dignity that is infinite, and therefore, there are an enormous number of people out there you can marry and have a successful marriage with, rich with love, faith, and hope. Does God specifically bring two people together? Yes, he does, but he is not limited by that specific combination. If we say that it had to be that person, then I think we are inadvertently A) undermining what God is capable of, B) devaluing the huge number of other godly, immortal, beautiful people out there that you could have married, and C) it also says something about yourself. Are you really so inflexible that nobody else could have possibly been your bride? 😛 What makes a marriage a sacrament - as opposed to natural marriage - is that Christ is directly involved, not that two particular people were involved.

I’ve recently started exploring the dating world (not in person - I live in an isolated area - but on a dating site) and I have noticed something for myself: I’m a white guy that’s not very big on white women. They’re not as pretty. I know… blunt and harsh, right? I wish it weren’t so, but it is what it is. The Asian & Hispanic women (especially the Asian) are more appealing to me on average. Especially the Asian women because their profiles tend to be more mature imo. There’s not as many Hispanic women with a good educational background. I’m even kind of tempted to move to California so I can be in close proximity to my type.

This is something I pray about though. I don’t want some superficial factor to prevent me from entering into an amazing marriage.

As a white woman, I would be offended if your post wasn’t true for myself. 😛 I don’t find myself attracted to white men. It could be because I ran into a few white guys who didn’t treat me right. I’m really not sure. One reason I was pondering was if God put the desire in my heart for a specific type of person to serve as a guide. But, it sounded a little weird so I wanted to see what y’all thought.

Everybody looks “exotic” to somebody, I guess! 😃

Does God consider these kinds of desires though? Or do you think its just us making life more complicated?

I am of the same opinion of on_the_hill. God doesn’t send us a spouse nor send us help. He doesn’t have someone in mind for us and we aren’t made for someone and someone isn’t made for us.

Instead God gives us the choice of who to marry and honours our choice.

Well, that makes it sound bleak. I’m not one to be flirtatious with the opposite sex. And most of the time I do something really embarrassing even when I’m not in a romantic situation. I just get really nervous around men. 😊

If I don’t have divine assistance I’ll probably be single for life. The reason being, once when I was young and dumb I learned the hard way that it is a bad idea to allow yourself to be infatuated with a crush; quite embarrassing actually. Now I just wait for guys to approach me. And, well, they don’t for the most part.

One suggestion is that you dress smartly at all public occasions. It seems so common to see girls in outfits that do nothing to attract attention…clothing that appears purposefully made to be tasteless…

Now this is not to be confused with dressing provocatively. The stress should be upon showing self-respect.

The second suggestion is that you do as little talking as is necessary, but that when you do speak you are gracious and friendly. Provide an opportunity for a potentially tongue-twisted guy to approach you. Do not look after the strong, confident, type who might stare you right in the eye and take you where they will…that type that exudes confidence knows all of the right words already…that type should be handled with caution…instead allow your gaze to linger occasionally upon the quieter fellows in the background. Chances are better that these do not yet have dates…but consider that these may be even more nervous in approaching you than you are at their approach…so timing is essential: lingering too long could be alarming…not long enough will not provide the opportunity for the right amount of courage to be fostered…

This is why group activities are so helpful in these areas because they allow everyone to behave more naturally until nervousness subsides in favor of more natural friendships…there is less pressure that way for all concerned…so seek out some groups you might join…and allow things to take their proper course… 😉

I do dress smartly. I don’t dress punk like one of my previous threads might lead you to believe. (It was a very short phase). I wear nice jeans or skirts and blouses and wear nice makeup. There is nothing wrong with my appearance ( I hope. What if I’m ugly?!). Yup, I’m pretty sure I need divine assistance. 😦
