How does God stimulate our innate desire for Him?

I’ve recently decided to revisit my RCIA materials to further reinforce my faith. So starting from the first segment, something caught my eye in the Compendium. It stated that
God himself, in creating man in his own image, has written upon his heart the desire to see him. Even if this desire is often ignored, God never ceases to draw man to himself because only in God will he find and live the fullness of truth and happiness for which he never stops searching.
So my question is, how exactly does God continue to draw someone who suppresses this innate desire to search for him?

Hi,

Good question! He usually draws us by allowing us to carry a cross. Nothing makes us recognize our need for Him faster than having to deal with some sort of pain that we can’t manage by ourselves. And it really works! While a lot of pain is wasted with people railing at their situations, most deep spiritual awakenings come about in this way. In finally recognizing that we can’t manage our situation alone, we turn to Him. Such is a moment of grace; a moment when we acknowledge that we are not enough for ourselves and that we exist for Him. It is a shift from living principally for oneself to living principally for God and is the stuff of which saints are made.
