How does Jesus release 1,000 souls from Purgatory every time St. Gertrude's prayer for the poor souls is said?

According to tradition, our Lord promised St. Gertrude that 1000 souls would be released from Purgatory each time this prayer is prayed devoutly:

“Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.”

But isn’t the purpose of Purgatory to purify sinners through suffering so that will be perfect when they enter Heaven? How can a sinful soul be perfect when he/she enters Heaven if his/her period of purification is cut short due to prayer?

Tread very lightly with these alleged visions of saints. This prayer is almost certainly apocryphal. Even if a saint had claimed such a personal revelation, it would not be considered a teaching of the Church.

We don’t know how time works in the afterlife, except that Purgatory is finite and that Heaven and Hell are infinite.

It’s unlikely in my opinion that a second on Earth feels the same as a second in purgatory.

Well, we do know it as a doctrine of the Faith that when we pray for souls in purgatory, their time can be shortened. We know that they can do nothing of their own once they were there but having a mass said for them may greatly expedite their delivery from purgatory.

If I understand rightly, Purgatory is an extension of God’s justice but it seems that the merits of Christians who intercede for such souls invokes his Mercy to the degree that their purification is expedited, God Willing.

Maybe that is not 100% theologically accurate, but I think it’s close.

the promises in those prayers were rescinded by the vatican. the 15 st bridgette prayers also.

they are banned from publication now.

The prayers have not been banned; it is the promises that were banned from publication. @JamalChristophr said it, time is shortened when we pray for those in purgatory. Thus, there is no problem in a grace that has been given to St. Gertrude to release 1000 souls, instead of one, with our prayers.

This is theologically accurate.

But, also, we do need to be careful about private revelation and give them a grain of salt. Even with approved apparitions and locutions, we are never required to believe them and are not required for our salvation.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BROTHER IGNATIUS!!! Thank you for saying YES to your vocation. 🌻

Thank you. I officially enter into the realm of the elderly. I apply this week for social security retirement pension.

September 29th was also the anniversary of my vows (22 years) to the evangelical counsels and other vows of our society (prayer, substantial solitude, substantial silence, penance, and mortification).

Since the other portion has been addressed (that the promises here are not church teaching), I’d like to address this latter part.

There is atonement for temporal justice of sin in purgatory, but the ultimate purification comes by the grace of God. When we pray for the souls in purgatory, we are asking that God pour out more grace on them such that their purgation is all the more effective/efficient (hard to label for a place where time is not really equivalent to here). This is why the deposit of merit/grace are important for the souls in purgatory.

yes. the promises in those prayers and the promises in the 1 year 15 prayers and 12 year St Bridgette Prayers are banned.

exactly what I said.

they are banned from print . the promises, not the prayers.

we cannot know how our indulgences or prayers for those in purgatory are used. That is entirely up to God.

but one of the best things we can do for those in purgatory is earn them indulgences and pray for them

🙏🕊️

they in purgatory can pray for us.

The Church does NOT teach this. We are not obligated to believe anything in private revelations. If someone gets a spiritual lift from one or the other private revelations then fine but they are not new teachings and nor do they add to any teachings of the Church.

Catechism
1475 In the communion of saints, "a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things."86 In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin.

We have a merciful God who when he releases a soul from purgatory I am sure their time to enter Heaven is at hand. To meditate on the Passion of Jesus is something all of us should do and is exhibted in the prayers of St. Bridget as far as the promises they do not merit the same credence as the truths of religion. God knew the hearts of the souls before they entered purgatory let Him bring them Home…God Bless

If you think about it, it’s not logical. This alleged promise says that reciting this prayer is equivalent to 1,000 plenary indulgences, without the other usual conditions of a plenary indulgence.

This is probably a hyperbole designed to encourage you to pray for others.

I’d abstain from any sort of legalism; particularly as it pertains to purgatory. Just pray for 'em.

It’s entirely possible given the great enormous numbers of people whose souls reside in purgatory at any given time, that 1000 could be released.
Just pray the prayer. It’s lovely. The benefits are more likely going to affect YOU.

“How”?
Well think about the prayer itself. You are offering God the Father the Most Precious Blood of His Divine Son, in union with ALL the Masses said throughout the world for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
How many Masses are said throughout the world during a weekday? How many are said on a Sunday?? What is the value of Agnus Dei’s Most Precious Blood?
With exact certainty, we can’t really answer those questions (especially when those merits are applied to the members of the Church Penitent). Unless you receive a bona fide private revelation of how this miraculous grace does work, I would just focus on recite this prayer with the most concentration and reverence.

Plenary Indulgences? What has this to do with Plenary Indulgences?

A living person can offer an indulgence he or she earns for a soul in purgatory. A plenary indulgence, as I’m sure you know, means the complete remission of all temporal punishment. So apply that to a soul in purgatory, and he/she is released.
