From what I understand, sloth is spiritual laziness. Does one prevent himself from committing this sin by praying every day? Is there a certain amount of prayer (or other) that one must do to avoid sloth? What exactly must one do to avoid sloth?

When you find yourself thinking, “Oh, i havent prayed for a few days” instead of “Oh, i havent prayed for a few hours” its becoming spiritual sloth.

We should be in a constant state of prayer.

In Christ.

Do you have a source for this?

i’m not too sure about your question but i do know that its good to give time to God every day. Whether you stop in church and pray everyday, read the bible, or attend mass everyday, its good to "climb Gods mountain as Fr. Larry would say. If you get a chance, go to fr.larry.com, go to his homilys and click on his homily of november 24th 2004. very good, life changing, homilys.

Does the Church require or recommend a certain amount of time to pray or do other spiritual things each day?

I don’t know if it is mandated or not but I think its recommended and expected.
After all, God is offering us eternity with him so surely we have give him some time every day.

Are we careless about Mass ?
Is it no big deal to miss Holy days of obligation ?
Are we too tired now to even say a prayer before bedtime ?
Is catching your favourite soap more important than time given to the Rosary or prayer in general ?
Do we excuse ourselves with, oh it wasn’t that bad a sin, I don’t need to goto Confessions ?
Do we take part in the responses at Mass or do we mumble under our breath, or worse still say nada ?
That sick relative in hospital, will I trouble myself to vist him/her today or put it off ? (laziness)

Someone said this and I don’t know where it came from, " The Devil makes work for idle hands to do."

Thats just a few up above that came into my head, I apply them to myself aswell. 😦

Actually I agree with this. I don’t think you can put any sort of quantitative value on it. As such, to be ready at all times you must constantly be in a state of prayer. Asking yourself WWJD with each action is my way of doing this. This is not to say I don’t have sit down prayers, preferably each morning, but God knows this is not always possible with my schedule. So I choose to pray in other ways.

I will let others wiser than me share what it means to “pray constantly.”

Halo:
Really enjoyed the article by St John Vianney Thankyou
Thanks, I thought this thread had kicked the bucket, 🙂 it’s been awhile since I posted it, Saint John is very dear to me, a very wise man in the things of God.:bible1: all the more wonderous given the fact that he was poorly educated.

I am not sure if being a sloth in ragrds to being lazy is a sin but it cetainly is not good if not sin. When I used to be on this computer way too much or watch hours of televison and play video games all day, that might not be a sin, but what I am doing now with my spare time, which is while still being on the computer and watching tv, limiting it and having fun learnign to play the piano which is something a lot more produtive as well.Especially since I am still in college and thankfulyl don’t have to work, there is a lot of free time to do things even after I get all my school work done so I’m starting to use it more benefically now.

One good way to overcome sloth is have someone to be accountable to–whether a spiritual director, a mentor, or maybe even a prayer group.

Then the advisor can hold you accountable for working on whatever resolution you have.
