:hmmm: Can you briefly explain the normal duties/responsibilities of a deacon, and the steps one takes to become one?

Thank you!

First, let’s identify the two types of deacons. A man in formation for the priesthood is ordained a transitional deacon before he is ordained a priest. A permanent deacon is a role that was revived after Vatican II. Those ordained permanent deacons remain deacons, usually throughout their ministry. Deacons receive the sacrament of holy orders, thus the diaconate is only open to men.

A deacon assists the priest at Mass; he can proclaim the Gospel reading and give a homily; he can preside at marriages, baptisms, and funerals. Outside liturgical functions, deacons are usually involved in the local parish’s or diocese’s charitable services.

As there are a number of deacons who participate in the Catholic Answers Forums, you might ask this question in the Sacraments Forum of this site and see what responses you get. You should also call your local vocations committee and diocese for more information.
