How does one become an apologist?

Hi- I was wondering what exactly makes one an apologist? What kind of schooling is involved and would there be a distance learning course one could take online (since I move so often because my husband is in the military and we are often overseas)?

I have always been curious about the process. It would be wonderful to be that educated in the church.
