How does one explain suffering to teens?

I am thinking of suffering, birth defects, diseases, natural disasters etc. I think that all suffering can trace their root cause to sin, but am not sure how to explain this to young people. Maybe this is because I do not have an informed understanding of the relationship between sin and suffering.
