How do I respond?
A couple, who were Catholic and married in the early 1960’s for many years practiced the “Rhythm system” . They had 6 children and one miscarriage. The Wife became depressed during her last pregnancy and had a tubal ligation at the time of giving birth to their last child. The husband was against the operation but could not insist that it not be done --being influenced by his wife’s depression. He confesses to a priest about his mistake.
After the tubal they continued to have “relations” for many years until the wife started menopause. She confessed many years later.
Are their “relations” still sinful (as the tubal was never reversed) (if this were possible). Must this be done even though she is now many years into menopause? Can they receive communion?

Spencer ,

These links should be helpful in understanding the Church’s position on sterilization and what a Catholic’s obligations are after having such a procedure. If you have any further questions or concerns that are not answered by these links, please contact Catholic Answers directly.
