How does one go to Heaven, Purgatory or Hell DIRECTLY IMMEDIATELY upon death? (Afterlife discussion)

Yes, I think that this is where the problem lies, so you have to get at ‘why are they rejecting dogmas’.

You ask questions like ‘do they not understand how to tell what dogma is’, or ‘do they simply not care’? You try to figure out the fundamental reason. Are they getting their Catholicism from popular newspapers and publications? What is going on? But generally I think these are people coming from a worldly perspective who have taken statements that can only be read in the light of tradition, in the light of the contemporary worldview morality instead. They fall for the ever so easy trap of making God fit their views coming out of the world rather than vice versa.

The concept of limbo is unpopular with people trying to please other people’s ears for obvious reasons. So obviously if it can be ignored, neglected, etc. it will be by those with any excuse however slim to do so.

To a degree so people become victims of their own lack of historical knowledge and ambiguous statements meant to please the ears a little too much perhaps, when used outside of the context of history.

You can see that people have been plainly taught the necessity of baptism, with instructions on emergency baptism for miscarriages and danger of death – but now that we are in a time of profound ignorance and lack of Faith, people feel like whatever they come up with is what it is, rather than something more educated and sometimes yes, tougher to accept at first.

I think people who have a problem with dogmas of original sin, etc. probably had poor catechesis often enough and stuck with that, and make their judgements about morality based on emotion a good deal rather than approaching moral law with the implicit acceptance of a good deal of things that at first will be hard.

People who try to educate others about these dogmas are doing an unpopular task, who wants to speak about the terrible consequences of original sin? Who wants to defend that the unbaptized babies who die are deprived of the beatific vision? Only those who realize that in fact, there is dogma proclaimed here. And so there is grave harm done by denying the dogma.

Limbo’s existence is not decided by our emotions. Original sin’s existence is not decided by our emotions. In this world, young babies suffer and die, emotionally we find this hard to accept, but this is the Creation God has given us. It does not go away because we have trouble reconciling it emotionally at first. On the contrary, only by embracing dogmas do we find the route to truly accepting and placing the harder things in life within our limited understanding. 🙂

‘Whoever says that infants are alive in Christ even when they depart this life without being baptized is really both opposing the Apostolic preaching and condemning the whole Church which runs hastily with infants to the baptismal font because it is beleived without any doubt that otherwise these infants cannot possibly be alive in Christ.’

'If you want to be a Catholic do not believe, do not say, do not teach that infants carried off by death before being baptized can obtain the remission of original sin."

St. Augustine, Father, Bishop, Doctor of the Church ‘Doctor of Grace’

A good sermon on Limbo – starts a few minutes in.
Very good comments. I think it is of great importance that we accept all the teachings of the Church, even those that are unpopular in our day and uncomfortable for us to accept (such as the one being discussed from the Council of Florence). If the Church teaches it, it is true and we have to accept it. In fact, we should probably try extra hard to hold on to the dogmas that are the most difficult to accept in our day since these will be the first to go. 😦

I’ll listen to the sermon you linked to this evening. 🙂

I just finished listening to the Sermon, and I think everyone needs to hear it. The Priest (Fr. W?) confirms everything Ultima Ratio and Gregory I have said in this discussion, and he includes much that hasn’t been said. I don’t think anyone who is honest can listen to this sermon and not be moved to accept the doctrine of Limbo.

Thank you for providing the link. 👍 May God open the hearts of all who listen to it.

StTommyMore:

Only 3 types of people can die in original sin alone:

Because all are born in original sin justly condemned and dead in the sin of adam,

Can you add or subtract any to this list?
  1. Infants
    2.Mentally Handicapped
  2. Virtuous Pagans.
All of these are invincibley ignorant, but one, or all will be punished with the pain of loss of the beatific vision.

THerefore if those who die in original sin alone descend to hell to be punished with various punishments, which of these is it?

Do you admit ONE of these classes of people will?

I am not God, so I will not answer your question. I do not presume to tell God what He must do.

You do not have to be GOd to make an act of discernment. All that are born have original sin. It doesn’t take an act of God to figure that out, just reading. So I repeat:

Will either:
  1. Unbaptized babies
  2. Mentally handicapped
  3. Or virtuous pagans
Be punished with the loss of the vision of GOd? It cannot be any less than one, or all three of these groups of people.

On what basis do ytou object to making a decision? You can’t say you do not know who is born into original sin: Everyone.

You can’t say that you don’t know what kind of people die in original sin alone:
Well, it is obviously a human being born in original who is incapable of commiting actual sin.

You can’t say you don’t know what kind of people are born in original sin alone:
Infants and small children before they reach the age of reason,
THe mentally handicapped, and MAYBE SOME Virtuous pagans who had alot of love that would cover over their lighter sins. “For love covers over a multitud eof sin.” BOok of James.

So, now, to refrain to choose is to remain willfully ignorant which is also a sin which is tantamount to denying the faith.

So, do any of these three classes of people suffer the loss of the vision of God?

Tell GOd what he must do?! God has said what he will do and to WHOM! I simply ask you to tell me if any one or all of these three classes will be deprived of the vision of GOd, on the Faith of the Church.

I am done playing your games. I am unsubscribing from this thread and adding you to my ignore

I do not wish to play games. I am merely trying to discuss the DOGMAS of our faith intelligently.

Nobody has denied anything…except for the traditionalists, who deny that God is not bound by the sacraments.
Oh, PLEASE don’t say that. :bighanky:
I
I am a very Traditional Catholic. I attend the TLM. exclusively & believe in monthly Confession (**at least **monthly).
I have a problem with EEM’s being used when it isn’t necessary, etc., etc., ETC.

However, I would never deny that God is not bound by the Sacraments. I’ve also mentioned that Christ said to the thief crucified beside him. “Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.” I do believe that we are all born in Original
Sin, but I firmly believe in the Baptism’s of water, blood & desire & the ability of all 3 Baptisms to lead us to Paradise.

You’ll find some of the arguments given on this thread here:
catholicism.org/ad-rem-no-141.html

These "Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at St. Benedict’s center are what’s left of the followers of Leonard Feeney. They are a fringe group much like the one that Hutton & Mel Gibson follow & I want nothing to do with them.

Traditional Catholics follow the Pope & Benedict XVI approved a document which says: “We can say we have many reasons to hope that there is salvation for these babies.” (news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070420/ap_on_re_eu/vatican_limbo)

Remember, there is only ONE baptism, sacramental baptism. THe other two are reffered to as baptism by analogy: “One lord, one faith one baptism…”

Oh, and let me make clear that I belive that a person in invincible ignorance who follows his conscience MAY be saved. Not because he will be saved in a different way than the Church has given us, but because God will make that person’s faith explicit so that they can be saved as CATHOLICS, for outside the church there is no salvation.

SO, that statement, that those invincibley ignorant who are following their conscience and desiring the truth may be saved can be harmonized with tradition if you believe that God wants people to Come to him in the way he set up…THAT is our hope for their salvation. That God will not abandon them to their ignorance, which is not pleasing to him, nor leave them without divine and Catholic Faith, without which it is impossible to please God; But that he will bring the faith to them in a way they can understand.

If you have no faith, the desire to receive baptism is of no avail. If you have faith, but do not desire to receive the sacraments, your faith is of no avail, for the sacraments are necessary for salvation. THerefore, to be saved, you must accept GOd’s prevenient grace and receive the gift of faith and have a firm vow and intention to receive the sacraments. Only then can a person be saved if they do not actually receive them, but it is still not the same as if they had: For there is no sacramental character.

So the church has taught. Baptism of desire is an Explicit desire for water baptism, which desire is preceded by a manifest Catholic faith… The Church knows nothing of implicit desire for baptism, nor is it taught in any of the dogmas. It is Hopeful speculation.

According to the Catechism of Pope St. Pius X:

12 Q: Why such anxiety to have infants receive Baptism?
A: There should be the greatest anxiety to have infants baptized because, on account of their tender age, they are exposed to many dangers of death, and cannot be saved without Baptism.

13 Q: Do parents sin, then, who, through negligence, allow their children to die without Baptism, or who defer it?
A: Yes, fathers and mothers who, through negligence, allow their children to die without Baptism sin grievously, because they deprive their children of eternal life; and they also sin grievously by putting off Baptism for a long time, because they expose them to danger of dying without having received it.
catholicbook.com/AgredaCD/PiusX/psacr-b.htm

Is a catechism promulgated by a POPE part of the authentic ordinary and official magisterium?! 👍

It is not for you or I to say, but God alone. I will say that those who die in original sin are damned, but I stop short of saying who is or is not definitively in original sin.
Sttommymore, I think it is better to say that we cannot enter heaven with original sin. Now with that said, and not that I do not agree with the teachings of the Church but I believe that it is possible by God’s grace that if a person by no fault of their own have not been baptised they can be baptised by the grace and mercy of God. And that is also the teaching’s of the Church.

The Pope can only teach what is revealed to him by God. And 2 things are revealed.
  1. You must be baptised to have forgivness of original sin.
  2. We must rely on God’s mercy and compassion.
Those are both teaching’s of the RCC. So as you can see, we cannot say anyone will not enter heaven for any reason. God is the judge not us.

But all we can do is teach the truth, and spread the truth and pray all will enter into Baptism so they can have a real good shot at eternal life, (what I am saying God gave us a choice to choose him also, by giving us free will.)

But for those who do not have the choice or chance there is something called extraordinary circumstances.

Shin isn’t that what its called or something like that?

rinnie, it is also revealed that those who die Mortal sin or in original sin ALONE descend to hell to be punished, but with different punishments.

GOd has also not revealed any other means of salvation except baptism.

God is also bound to uphold his word, and cannot act contrary to his own nature, he is not fickle.

If someone IS saved extraordinarily, they will be saved as a CATHOLIC, and not anything else, because there is No salvation given otside the church of God.

I went to Catholic school in the 1960’s and I was taught about Limbo. We were also taught to baptize a baby ourselves just in case the baby died before he could get baptized by a priest. Whether right or wrong, I baptized my babies right after they were born and later by a priest. I used to be of the opinion that surely babies who die without Baptism still went to heaven until I start to think about aborted babies. We all know that the devil is the author of murder. So if all these millions of aborted babies’ souls went straight to Heaven to worship God, wouldn’t the devil not like that. He doesn’t want souls to go to Heaven. So maybe the souls of these aborted babies don’t go straight to Heaven. Maybe there is a Limbo and even though there is no pain other than loss of seeing God. In this day and time, people like to think that everybody who is nice is going to Heaven. Nobody is taught about mortal sin or original sin anymore. I’m not arguing with either of the 2 people on this thread. You’re both right in what you quote. However, only God knows what happens to unbaptized souls. We just have to trust in His mercy.

On Purgatory, pray for the Poor Souls constanly.

Again that is UNTRUE.

The Church has NEVER taught that unbaptised infants go to Hell.

Baptism is the means by which God gave the Church the way to communicate supernatural life to a person.

Despite your opinion the Church teaches that God is not bound by his sacraments. Anyone who denies this commits heresy.

SHow me the dogma teaching that God is not bound to uphold his owen decrees.

I will show you the dogma teaching that original sin is in all, and has the character of a personal fault in all, so that all are justly condemned.

I will also show you the dogma that those who die in original sin alone suffer the loss of the beatific vision. (hell)

GO ahead, show me the dogmatic decree that says there is a means of sanctifying grace besides baptism. please, I will submit if you can simply show me. Show me the dogmatic decree saying GOd changes and does not respect his own religious requirements. SHow me where God made a mistake in his requirements of salvation and has to turn to “Extraordinary” means.🤷

Please.

Thistle, where did I say anything about infants when I reffered to rinnie? Although I can’t imagine anyone ELSE being capable of sying in original sin alone…save the mentally handicapped and virtuous pagans, ALL of which are invincibley ignorant.

The theologians who taught, in one form or another, that unbaptised children are deprived of the vision of God generally held at the same time a double affirmation: (a) God wills that everyone be saved, and (b) ***God, who wills that all be saved, wills equally the dispensations and the means that he himself has established for this salvation and that he has made known to us by his revelation. ***

i.e. God wills to uphold his law. He does not will to circumvent it.

“the divine design of salvation embraces all men; and those who without fault on their part do not know the Gospel of Christ and His Church, but seek God sincerely, and under the influence of grace endeavor to do His will as recognized through the prompting of their conscience, they, in a number known only to God, can obtain salvation.” Pope Paul VI.

I will assent even to this, if we acknowledge that the method known only to God entails making explicit the Catholic faith. For without Faith it is impossible to please God. Following your conscience does not convey sanctifying grace. Only Divine and Catholic Faith with a firm vow to receive the sacraments can do that.

**Revelation 14
The Lamb and the 144,000

14Then I looked, and there was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion! And with him were one hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a voice from heaven like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder; the voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, 3and they sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the one hundred forty-four thousand who have been redeemed from the earth. 4It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins; these follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been redeemed from humankind as first fruits for God and the Lamb, 5and in their mouth no lie was found; they are blameless.**

:angel1:

I saw there are 144,000 first fruits , they are blameless. I saw that there are possible some people on earth are good, I mean even if they have fault, not to that degree, just little fault, they can purify when they still on earth, they can go to Heaven after death, or be redeemed and never die.

Below is the Church doctrine that binds us. We are obliged to believe the Church teaching that God is not bound by his sacraments. Do you deny this Church teaching?
Yes or No?

CCC 1257 The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation. He also commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them. Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament. The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are “reborn of water and the Spirit.”** God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments.**

rinnie, it is also revealed that those who die Mortal sin or in original sin ALONE descend to hell to be punished, but with different punishments.

Okay you will have to show me that teaching then buddy because I have never seen it.

To begin with if you die in mortal sin that means you refuse to repent your sin and you are going to hell and that is it.

Original sin and mortal sin are 2 very different things. Mortal sin is sin that we commit ourself and are quite aware of it and decide to commit the sin anyway.

Original sin is sin that we got from not fault of our own, but by Adam and Eve.

Here is the teaching of the CCC 1261 As regards children who have died without baptism the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved and Jesus tenderness toward children which caused him to say Let the children come to me, do not hinder them, allow us HOPE that THERE IS A WAY of salvation for children who have died without Baptism.

So I am sorry I feel what you are saying is not the teaching of the CC. ANd you must also read 1260 of the CCC. It says that we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to ALL the posibility of being made partakers in a way know to God of the Paschal mystery.

So while we know and must be baptised and know that we have to confess our sins, yes we are bound to practice the faith. But by no means does it say that original sin can be compared to Mortal sin. This is 2 very different sins.

You must read 1456 of the CCC. You must learn the difference between venial sin and mortal sin.

I believe that would be what I just showed you 1260 in the CCC.
