How does one live a Catholic life with same sex attraction?

I have a 17 year old who has just revealed he is gay and has know for 3 years. He is very involved in church and with his faith, however he doesn’t see a place for him as a gay man? He desires to love and to have a partner, but knows the churches teachings. How is a gay Catholic supposed to live their life?

Dear friend,

One with same sex attraction has as much a place in the Church as everyone else. Like everyone else, he or she is obliged to live as a celibate if not married. There are many, many heterosexually inclined people who for any number of reasons are not able to be married, even though they would enjoy the companionship and intimacy it provides.

But marriage is a vocation; a call from God. It is not a right. If God does not call certain persons to marriage, then He gives the necessary graces to aid them in following Him in the way He has chosen for them.

I might add, that every vocation, including marriage, has its crosses and challenges and pain. To follow the Lord’s call means to take up one’s cross. Each cross is an invitation to come closer to Him and He is so worth it!

To embrace one’s vocation is to begin by focusing on the Lord’s Passion and the love He has for us. Our lives, whatever they entail, are our own unique response to His Self-donation to us.
