While people will have the anecdotal tale, in the real day to day life of a parish we very often get the call about “Roamin’ Catholics”. The Catholic who has not been on the mailing list of any parish in the area and they are either in the hospital calling for the Last Rites or they have already passed and want to schedule a funeral Mass.
I’d venture to say that a quarter of the funerals we have are for people who were unknown to any area parish. We are simply happy that the family is going to give them a Mass!
Our bereavement put on the same spread after the funeral as they would for a pillar of the parish.
Sometimes we in the office go over to “fill the pews” for people we have never met because the family is small and turnout is low.
No one is every denied a Mass simply because they were not on the mailing list or not donors.
