How does one respectfully dispose of ashes?

In accordance with the rules of the church, what are appropriate ways of disposing of the ashes of a loved one? I have heard that casting them into the ocean or burying them on a favored site is in opposition to church rules. I have been in possession of ashes for over ten years and feel that it is time to lay them to rest. But I wish to do so in a wholly respectful and appropriate manner.

Actually, you are obliged to have the ashes interred in a Catholic cemetery. Check with your diocese about this.
