I was wondering how does one’s local Bishop come into office? How long is the position? Thanks in advance

Normally a priest’s name is submitted by his bishop to the congregation for bishops in Rome as likely candidate for elevation to the episcopate. If chosen his is likely made “titular bishop” of some no longer existing see. He is then made an auxiliary bishop to a resident bishop or archbishop. After some time in that post he may be given a diocese of his own. There are bishops who never have a diocese. A lot of bureaucrats at the Vatican are bishops sine cure.
Not all men follow this path, but it is the normal procedure.

Missed your last question re. length of term. Bishops are supposed to retire at age 75 if not before. Note that not all follow the ruling set down by a previous pope (Paul VI?), including our current curiously reigning pontiff, Benedict, who should have retired some time ago.

but Pope Benedict by that point wasn’t acting as a Bishop or do you mean priests in general are supposed to retire at 75?
but anyway, I just wonder cause you know how it is with the very very liberal bishops. I was just wondering how long in general to plan on dealing with the unfortunate liberalism that I see. It is so tough when you see it actually getting worse…

The Vicar General is appointed by the Ordinary. He can be either a bishop or another priest of the diocese.
As to the above statement that Cardinal Ratzinger was not working as a bishop, that’s not completely correct. The Secretaries for the Vatican Offices must be occupied by bishops or religious who are in orders and have PhDs in theology, church law, church history, liturgy, ministry or divinity.
In addition, Cardinal Ratzinger submitted his resignation twice. Once at age 75 and later. Both times it was rejected by the Pope.
If a bishop is a member of a religious order, he may return to live with his community after retirement.
Even the Pope can resign. There is no rule that says he has to be pope for life. If he does, he returns to his diocese or if he’s a religioius, to his religious order.

Thank God our Vicar General is AWESOME! Very orthodox and truly a holy man. Is it usually the Vicar General that the Bishop appoints or submits to be the next Bishop? Or I suppose it can be whomever he wishes to submit. Thanks for your replies.
