According to a document from the Pontifical Academy for Life,
The consensus in the scientific community, though, seems to be that fertilization occurs when the zygote forms. From Human Anatomy & Physiology, Seventh Edition by Marieb & Hoehn (pg. 1116):The moment that marks the beginning of the existence of a new “human being” is constituted by the penetration of sperm into the oocyte. Fertilization promotes a series of linked events and transforms the egg cell “zygote”.
Some sources define fertilization simply as the act of oocyte penetration by the sperm. However, unless the chromosomes in the male and female pronuclei are actually joined, the zygote is never formed in humans.
