How does the Church hierarchy view a priest who does not believe in all Church teaching or dogmas?

For example, can a priest believe that homosexual marriage should be allowed and still be considered a priest in good standing? Are there instances in which a priest automatically brings excommunication upon himself for teaching contrary to church teachings?

"[6] But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea. [7] Woe to the world because of scandals. For it must needs be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh. "

Seems pretty clear to me. Another reason to reinstate the Oath against Modernism instituted by H.H. Pope St. Pius X. At least then there is NO denial of guilt when scandalizing the Faithful

Code of Canon Law

Can. 1364 §1. Without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 194, §1, n. 2, an apostate from the faith, a heretic, or a schismatic incurs a latae sententiae excommunication; in addition, a cleric can be punished with the penalties mentioned in ⇒ can. 1336, §1, nn. 1, 2, and 3.

§2. If contumacy of long duration or the gravity of scandal demands it, other penalties can be added, including dismissal from the clerical state.

Can. 1369 A person who in a public show or speech, in published writing, or in other uses of the instruments of social communication utters blasphemy, gravely injures good morals, expresses insults, or excites hatred or contempt against religion or the Church is to be punished with a just penalty.

Can. 1371 The following are to be punished with a just penalty:

1/ in addition to the case mentioned in ⇒ can. 1364, §1, a person who teaches a doctrine condemned by the Roman Pontiff or an ecumenical council or who obstinately rejects the doctrine mentioned in ⇒ can. 750, §2 or in ⇒ can. 752 and who does not retract after having been admonished by the Apostolic See or an ordinary;

2/ a person who otherwise does not obey a legitimate precept or prohibition of the Apostolic See, an ordinary, or a superior and who persists in disobedience after a warning.

To my dislike a major article was in the Newspaper this weekend illustrating how Catholics, layman and Priests are split on homosexuality. Many openly espouse being open to marriage for gay marriage. Even Priest spoke against the rigid opposition.

The priest at the church I work at is openly in favor of gay marriage. He photocopies newspaper articles about Catholics who speak in favor of it and then passes the copies out to everyone in the office. Needless to say I immediately put my copy in the recycle bin. lol

Perhaps, I would strongly recommend this, bring this matter to the attention of the local bishop.

If there is evidence (not hearsay) that any priest rejects any of the Church teachings and worse still promotes such then he should be reported to the bishop along with the evidence.

if a priest teaches contrary to the Church’s teachings it will be only a matter of time and he will have to answer for it. What and when that happens deopends largely on the bishop of his diocese.
