How does the Presbyterian idea of the "Elect" make sense?

Whatever the present-day Presbyterian churches might teach on God simply knowing (via foreknowledge) whether someone will choose salvation or not, it is clear the Calvin himself explicitly denied that predestination was simply a result of foreknowledge and affirmed that predestination was just that: God pre-destining someone for either election or reprobation.

Wasn’t Presbyterianism based on Calvinism? If it was, then this is useful to my understanding of the belief in question. Thank you, I think you may have steered this thread away from “Tangentville.”

That was very interesting to read, thank you. What do the Presbyterians say about all of this? Is this in alignment with their view?

Also, what do your abbreviations mean? You use them a lot, and I am not able to follow your part of the discussion.

I’m not able to sum it up easily, because the question is very broad and I would have to pick out every tidbit that is related to it and write it all here. Is there something more particular you would know? I haven’t seen anything in my copy of the CCC yet that seems to encompass the entire view, or I would have simply given it to you. I am not the perfect person to ask, either, because it takes me a long time to look things up. I’m sure there are other threads that have addressed this, and could sum it up very nicely.

It seems necessary that I explicitly state my purpose for this thread, since many people seem to be confused about it:

I am not trying to debate predestination. I am trying to understand why someone believes what they do and how they can reasonably believe it. If you believe something that I don’t, I am going to ask every question I can think of, challenging or not, to understand exactly why you came to that conclusion. That is how I learn. I am not trying to determine whether the Presbyterian view is rightly or wrongly held, I just want to know why it is believable to the Presbyterians!

I ask because I would like to know what the official position is. I haven’t been able to find it.
