Does anyone know of a portrait of St. Thomas Aquinas which best reflects his genuine appearance? Are there descriptions of the saint’s hobbies, routine, disposition, height, weight, eating habits, body shape, etc.?

Really curious about this great saint! 😛 😊

We don’t know, as he died before photography was introduced. But written accounts from his time suggest he was a tall, heavy man. We would today say “large endomorphic.”

I’ve heard it cleverly stated, because of his great pondering, and his large girth, that St. Thomas Aquinas was,

The original deep, fat, friar!

Art Historian Sister Wendy claims they had to cut a big circle out of the communal dining table so he could eat properly and reach his plate.
He spend much of his time in study and writing.

13th century Dominican Friars didn’t get too much exercise, I would guess.

Based on all these great theological works that he did, he didn’t have too much free time (like all priests), and the free time he did have was probably spent in prayer, and some recreation; thus he was heavy built.

Here’s a painting of St Thomas Aquinas painted 92 years after his death, from Wikipedia’s webpage of the Angelic Doctor :D:D
