How does your priest do the elevation during the final doxology

How do I edit the question? It should read: When doing the major elevation, alone without a deacon, how does your priest do the elevation during the final doxology?

When celebrating without a deacon, the priests at my parish:

Pastor (a secular diocesan priest): host over chalice

Assistant Pastor (a Franciscan): host on the ciborium side by side with the chalice (he doesn’t use a paten).

I’ve seen all 3, it all depends on where I am and who’s presiding.

Most of the priests at the two churches I attend regularly hold the host over the chalice and elevate it. One priest tore a rotator cuff muscle earlier this year when playing golf, and he elevates the host in the ciborium next to the chalice. I suppose it feels more secure to him that way.

I had this conversation a few month ago with on of my priest friends. The rubrics state that the host on the paten is elevated along with the chalice (I am at home so don’t have access to my Sacramentary) It doesn’t say to show the host. He used to show the host until I showed this rubric to him in the Latin (since he doesn’t trust the English translations of the rubrics). If you think of what is being said, it is a prayer addressed to the Father so the priest (and/or the deacon holding the chalice) is making the offering to God. There is no reason to show the host to the assembly at this point. It will be shown to the assembly again at the Ecce Angus Dei when we are asked to “Behold the Lamb of God” (in the new translation).

This is the 1960 rubrics

He uncovers the Chalice, and genuflects: then taking the Host in his right hand, and holding the Chalice in his left, he signs with the Sign of the Cross three times across the Chalice, saying:
By Him, and with Him, and in Him He signs twice between the Chalice and his breast. is to Thee, God the Father almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
He elevates a little the Chalice with the Host.

Did you not notice the explanation of my question…I think it is pretty uniform when there is a deacon assisting at Mass. The priest holds the paten/ciborium containing the host and the deacon (being the minister of the cup) holds the chalice.

The question was about when the celebrating priest is without deacon. That itself varies. There are usually three ways that priests do it when celebrating without a deacon.

GIRM #151: At the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest takes the paten with the host and the chalice and elevates them both while alone singing or saying the doxology, Per ipsum (Through him). At the end the people make the acclamation, Amen. Then the priest places the paten and the chalice on the corporal.
