How Drastic are the new changes coming to the Mass

I like the changes, makes the translations of Latin to English more faithful to what I’ve seen in EF Missals. I am looking forward to their use this Advent.

I’m curious as to how the chanting is going to change for the below.

Current
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People:And also with you.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest:Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People:It is right to give him thanks and praise.

New

Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks
to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just.

Everything can be sort of adusted in the chant until you get to the “it is right and just”. I’m curious to know if it will be a

**“it is ri-i-ight| an-an-and| ju-ust.” **

Or maybe the chant will be eliminated completely and they’ll just say it.

Any music directors know?
This one is pretty easy "it is/ ri-ight/and ju-ust you start it on a higher note than we do now. I think it is the same note as “let” in the previous line.

I’m not looking forward to the changes, and I’m sure most people in the real world aren’t looking forward to it either. To claim that the new translation will be closer to Latin is silly. Why are proponents stopping at an English translation? Why not just go the full length and use Latin? There’s the EF for those who want their Mass in Latin; why impose your preference(s) on the rest of us?

And the claim that the changes aren’t drastic begs the question - why change anything at all?

It was good just the way it was. As the adage goes, “if ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. I think we have people who are too smart for their own good who have too much time on their hands nitpicking supposedly incorrect verses. Now we have this…ughh…

Maybe the idea is to encourage the codified Latin so they don’t have to change the English every 40 years.

Sursum corda. (“Upwards hearts” not “Lift up your hearts”) In Polish, it’s directional, not pretend manual.

It’s not about the EF’ers imposing their agenda on the rest of you guys. It’s about wanting the texts of the Mass to be a little more faithful to the Latin. There’s so many of the people who want this, that actually do not particularly care for the Latin Mass.

Actually the Mass probably should not have been changed in the first time, but it happened. And the Church is blessed by it. And many will say that the words of the translation should not be happening, but in time I hope and pray that they will see that it is a blessing. I know personally I am beginning to see the blessings of Novus Ordo Masses, but it has taken me a long time to see it. Perhaps it is the same way regarding the translations.

There is a saying that it usually takes 40 years after a Council for things to settle down and the dust to blow away, perhaps it wll be the same way with this change of translations.

God bless.

Well hopefully it won’t take 40 years. I don’t see the changes as massive at all.

Now if the OF became the translation of the Tridentine, that would be massive!

When the “chreasters” come or even those who come a little more often but not weekly they will find the changes to be massive.

If it’s an agenda, it’s well grounded. Both forms have been promulgated in Latin, the CODIFED language of the Catholic Church and the Western Christian world since the early centuries. What does that say for those who reject Latin altogether?

One of the conditions for the 2007 SP is that the Missal of 1961 is to be said only in Latin. (John XXIII effectively prohibited the vernacular in his Veterum Sapientia.)

It’s either that or the OF. And, according to the latest rumors, the Pope would like more Latin in the OF as well.

The “chreasters,” almost by definition, will find any change to their Sunday schedule, massive. 🙂
