How effective are fundraisers for cures?

I was thinking about this a little while back while contemplating donating to Komen for the cure (I was thinking about not giving b/c of it’s ties to PP but that’s not the point).

This is an honest question - is it worthwhile to donate money to efforts to find cures for diseases? I’ll explain. If I lost something and wanted it found, would it be more effective to offer money upon the return of the lost item, or would it be more effective to pay somebody per hour they searched for it? Just wondering
 
I should add I am certainly not trying to plant seeds of doubt or discourage people from contributing to otherwise worthy causes!!!

Well, this is a field where doubt should be planted. Corporate sponsors get huge mileage from being linked with charities, often for a very limited commitment. When you see, “a percentage of profits will be donated” the contract with the charity is usually “X% of profits will be donated up to a limit of Y dollars.” and Y can be a fairly low figure.
