How fast do you pray the Rosary?

According to Bishop Sheen it should take about 15 minutes…I just ran across this bit of information the other day
Now you are making me laugh because the great and amazing Bishop Sheen was the Bishop in my diocese in NY for a few very short years.

Maybe saintly confirmation that New Yorkers just talk fast, no?😃

Too funny. I am a speed talker plus I have ADHD just to compound the speed factor. 😃 I usually don’t even bother to finish my thoughts. You’d probably catch about 2 words from me before your head spins.
Maybe that guy was you. He was a military man trying to recruit high school kids. 🙂 Anyhow, I did pray fast sometimes especially I was facing some dangers such as death – I wanted to make sure my words travel fast to Heaven 😃 . I might need your help on.

Understand it was on radio and programming may have had to stay within a certain time slot possibly.

The group was probably from NY. Everything is fast here. 😃
Fastest state in the country - be that good or bad. It just is.
That said, a 45 min pace on the radio would make me fall asleep.
True, even in upstate. 😃 😛
One way is to meditate on the words of each “Hail Mary” with meditation on the Mystery as only an aside, and the other way (which is what I do) is to meditate on the Mystery only and the “Hail Marys” are place holders and attention keepers only.
I meditate on the mysteries as well. I figure my conscious focus is supposed to be on the events of Jesus’ life and my subconscious (?) is on the words of each Hail Mary. Does that make sense?

It takes me thirty minutes. I have never been able to pray the Rosary very well in a group setting. I find it impossible to meditate on the mysteries. And they usually pray too fast. There’s no right or wrong to it–it’s my own personal preference and I connect to the Lord better this way.

i am a new catholic so i might be a little slower since i am still learning the mysteries and the days on which to say the mysteries. it probably takes me 20-25 minutes.

when i attend a weekday mass in the morning, there is a group that prays the rosary and they also pray very fast. i find it very disrespectful to Mary.
it almost seems like they are showing off how fast they can say it. then they add 2 prayers at the end that i am not familiar with so i can’t pray along with them on those 2. it is very frustrating. it seems very monotonous also the way they say it. they are an older group of people, so they have been praying the rosary for probably 70 years or more - far longer than i have been praying the rosary.

i have to confess that i don’t pray the rosary everyday because i do find my thoughts wandering. the best time is in the evening or late afternoon for me.
i try not to hurry, but if i am tired i think i just want to get it over with and that is not the frame of mind to be saying the rosary.

The same thing in my country, most people around this age prayed the Rosary very fast. I am not sure how it all started this way. However, at the church, we all prayed slowly.

I am upstate. I imagine NYC can even beat us up in pace.😃

Enjoy your upstate day.👍
Oh yeah, they’re 2 or 3 times as fast as us down in the city! 😛

Enjoy your upstate day too! 😃

Sounds like you’re doing just fine with the Rosary. Don’t worry about keeping up with others or whatever – uniting your heart to His in prayer is the most important thing. 👍 🙂

I’ve heard super-duper fast Rosary prayers who do really seem like they’re not focusing on what they’re doing at all. Having said that, EWTN has a recorded ‘Holy Land Rosary’ (led by Fr Pacwa) which is quite fast, about 17 or 18 minutes, but somehow still retains a lot of reverence.

My own personal preference is to pray slower - 25 minutes to half an hour. I’m loving the scriptural rosary at www.rosaryarmy.com, and also a quite nice and meditative chanted rosary by the Monks of Adoration (looks like it’s no longer available online, sadly). The chanted one really helps me to keep my focus if I’m praying, as I often do, during my commute to work or walk to the shops or Mass.

Let’s see… when I first started out 10 years ago, about 1 hour. Now, I also added in prayer intentions, and said it very slowly.

For quite awhile, I could say it in about 30 minutes. Now, it’s more like 20 (25 if I say it a bit slower).

According to Fr. Shaughnessy when he was talking to our parish during our Lenten Mission, he said (and he even timed it) one decade takes I think 2 1/2 minutes - seems about right. So, I guess maybe 10-12 minutes at the fastest if you rattled off one prayer after another, which I think defeats the purpose.

When I was a young 'un, we’d pray daily evening rosaries at our church during May and October. I remember that oftentimes, the leader – be that person a priest or laity – would begin the next prayer before he conclusion of the previous. For example, when the congregation was praying “. . . now and at the hour of our death, amen,” the leader would begin the next Hail Mary or the next Glory Be right before we said the “amen” to complete the previous Hail Mary.

I always found this disconcerting, but never asked why this was done. Have any of you had this experience or know why these prayers were prayed this way?

Oh, by the way, the Rosary usually takes about 20-25 minutes for me, depending upon fatigue, concentration and location (in front of the Blessed Sacrament, it takes a little longer).

Thanks and God bless,
Dan

yes, i have noticed the same thing. and sometimes there is more than one leader so that i kind of confusing. one time there were 3 leaders and 2 of the leaders overspoke one another. i guess they forgot who was to read the next mystery.
i almost feel like it is a contest between the leaders to see who can do it the quickest. sometimes i am almost out of breath and sweating i am so anxious about it! LOL i think they are supposed to be done within a certain amount of time before the mass starts, but what is the purpose if you are racing through the rosary. you can’t be thinking about the mystery or mary or Jesus because you are just trying to concentrate on keeping up!!! i am kind of laughing to myself just thinking about it. i don’t know if it has to do with the age group - they are 70-80 years old - maybe in their day the nuns really were strict with them about praying the rosary.
sometimes i won’t even join in with them, i will try to read, but then i still can’t concentrate on my reading because i hear them praying 90mph!!

I pray a daily rosary before morning Mass. It takes us about 20 minutes. When I walk to work I have a CD by Robert Kochis. It too is about 20 minutes long. I love it! What a better way to start the day!

My husband and I pray the Rosary and the Chaplet together daily and it takes us about 20 minutes for the Rosary and 10 minutes for the Chaplet and we do meditate on the mysteries.
When I was growing up, we prayed it together in our family and it usually took about 15 minutes, none of us ever thought we were being disrespectful to our Blessed Mother or Our Lord.
The way Fr. Mitch prays it on EWTN is actually the way that most cradle Catholics were taught to pray it years and years ago.(and that is about 15 minutes, including the mysteries.)

I haven’t started RCIA yet (it’s not offered in English at my parish, and I haven’t gone looking for a different parish) so I haven’t really worked out how to do the mysteries part yet. Saying the prayers and thinking about them takes me about 15 - 20 minutes if I’m fully awake and upright, and saying the prayers aloud. If I say it at bedtime, it takes at least 45 minutes because I’m slower to think and I keep nodding off. Also, it takes me longer to think the prayers than to say them, which I think is a good thing.

I’m sure God understands and forgives my good intentions in praying the Rosary wrong. I would really like to have somebody show me in person how to pray the Rosary, but I haven’t asked anybody yet. I’d ask my boyfriend, but he prays in Tagalog, and his prayer cards are in Tagalog too.

there should be plenty of places on the internet to go and hear how the rosary is prayed. and there is a lot of literature that shows you the proper way to pray. if you seek, ye shall find on the internet.

Ask yourself this the next time you pray the rosary, “Do you think Mother Mary would ask you to slow down?” If she was right there in front of you (which she is when you pray), would you feel comfortable with your prayer pace?

As for myself, it takes me about 20 minutes. It is sometimes more if I get on a really good meditation.

Sometimes I have very long drives to different work locations(up to 4 hours away). On these trips, I will occasionally “sing” or “chant” the rosary. I don’t have a very good voice, but I’m sure the intention counts for something:thumbsup:

This can take up to 40 minutes for 5 decades of the rosary. I have the occasion to sometimes have an hour (or two) in Adoration, and I will try to say more than 5 decades.

But in normal everyday circumstances, I am able to say the rosary in about 15-20 minutes. I particularly enjoy saying the rosary when Fr. Pacwa’s Holy Land rosary is on TV. The images help my meditations.

Yesterday afternoon, I was listening to some group praying the Rosary on a Catholic radio (I’d like not to mention the name), but they were praying super fast. I just couldn’t follow.

I have hard time concentrating on the Rosary; I was wondering how one could meditate on the mysteries if he/she prays so fast?
i shamefully admit that i’ve had it down in 3-5min. i have slowed down alot though:blush:
