As some individuals might have mentioned, Benedict and the modern Church are changing and moving beyond higher critical method.
One of the shortcomings was that it stayed in the past–history.
Also, it needs to have a hermeneutic of faith, which it did not have.
It did not make use of faith, it was trying to be part of the Enlightenment. Therefore it was not theology but merely history and literature.
The Church, as Vatican II teaches, must bring Jesus Christ to the world.
Here are two quotes from Fr.Collins, SJ The Word Made Love. He is taking the ideas and words from Benedict XVI:
Dignitatis Humanae (Vat. II Human freedom) only by holding firm to the faith can the Church unite humans
Code:
Historical-critical exegesis needs to add faith-hermeneutic
Then historical-critical method will become theology again
Applied to Bible and tradition
Faith-hermeneutic: flows from ecclesial context
Ecclesial: God speaks and Jesus Christ is the fullness of it
Dei Verbum: Bible must be read and interpreted in the sacred spirit in which it was written Harmony of faith Tradition
I know this sound old and new, but as the motto from the 1960s & 1970s wnet Change, Change and more Change. As the religious orders that only changed in the 1970s but have not changed since–they die. So we too must be making changes and add to the old criticism and give it life from our hermeneutic of faith.
another person has said this, I am sorry.
I have not read the thread.
