The impact thus far, is a continued broadening of my understanding of what “tradition” means in Catholicism. I find that exciting somehow, the diversity and the expanse of the Church and how see deals with Her children.
His humility, and courage in that humility, has touched me greatly. I dont find that easy, to be courageous in humility. For me I tend to just back off.
Also, being merciful in a just way has had me pondering.
Ever since Pope Emeritus resigned, I have contemplated the idea of conscience and how the Lord leads me that way. And how do I live out my conscience in the light of the Gospel. A lot of thought in that.
I’ve spent a lot of time in much watching and contemplating how the Spirit is moving, in the world, the Church, and my life.

I’ve not been impacted spiritually by Pope Francis yet. He has not done anything to inspire or deflate my spirit. Not surprising, since he was just elected to the office. Some CA members have gone charismatic over Pope Francis in a matter of days. I’m happy for them, but amazed at the immediate euphoria since most people know very little about the life, writings, history, or beliefs of Pope Francis. I’m actually concerned when I hear statements about the pope’s desire for a “poor Church”. What does that mean?
I’m waiting to see what Pope Francis does in office before I comment on his papacy. But as of today, I feel no tingles up my spine. God bless Pope Francis and may he serve the Church well.

There is a new book coming out on Pope Francis from Ignatius Press on April 30th: “Francis: Pope of a New World: A Photographic Record” by Andrea Tornielli.
I will likely buy it because I really know nothing about Pope Francis.

I have never been as spiritually excited and hopeful as I am now (that is since the first time Jesus called me). Pope Francis, with his focus on our love for our fellow man and our need to care for and protect those in need, has filled me with such a huge sense of optimism and spiritual hope for our Church and for humanity. This really is Pope filled with love, compassion and the Holy Spirit.
I believe Pope Francis will be one of our Church’s truly great Popes, one who will not let anything (hierachies, structures, traditions etc.) get in the way of his mission to take the Word of God to the wider world.

Brendan, I applaud you for your instant euphoria over Pope Francis. Good for you! As I stated earlier in this thread, I’ve experienced neither excitement or deflation over Pope Francis since the election. I pray for him at every Mass.

I follow my sports teams daily. With the MLB season coming up, I’m quite excited. My wife and daughters do the Facebook thing. I’ll take an Indians game over the computer any day.

Dave, I am sure that in a very short time Pope Francis will strengthen and unite our Church and instill in us a new sense of spirituality as he takes the Church to the wider world. There are tough times ahead for our Church, but the Holy Spirit, through Pope Francis with his compassion and love for mankind, will I’m sure strengthen us all so that we can fight evil in this world using the trusty sword of compassion and the shield of love. ‘Traditionalists’ and ‘modernists’ alike will put aside our differences come together as one under our new Pope and take the fight to the enemy.

Easy! My oldest daughter graduated from the University of Alabama in 2010. My youngest daughter graduates from The Ohio State University on May 5th.
We attend home games each year, so we’ve become personally attached to the Crimson Tide and Buckeye teams. I grew up in Ohio admiring Bear Bryant and the legendary Crimson Tide football team from afar, while being a lifelong fan of Woody Hayes and the Scarlet and Grey.

I am not insulting Brendan or others who feel the same way about Pope Francis. I’m genuinely happy for those who felt such instantaneous joy over Pope Francis’ ascension to the seat of St. Peter. It is purely an emotional or spiritual reaction by those affected. My wife is probably more in line with Brendan’s reaction than mine. I admit to feeling a bit more when Pope Benedict XVI was elected, in large part because I knew what we were getting (essentially another John Paul II). My feelings don’t matter anyway. Precisely because he is the pope, I will pray for, follow, and abide by the words and actions of Pope Francis. As a Catholic I can do no less.
It does not “bother me” that Brendan is filled with joy. I am not “insulting” Brendan or others. You insult me with your comments, Sirach2, so ignore my posts if you wish.
