How Important is Catholic Radio?

In your estimation, how vital is it that there be Catholic radio? I’m not talking about our program or any other program in particular. But the sense I get is that while some secular and non-Catholic Christian media outlets “get it right” when it comes to the Church and what it teaches, there’s no substitute for Catholic radio.

What do you think and why do you feel it’s important that Catholic radio not only survive, but thrive?

It’s EXTREMELY important.
We are to ‘go out’ and proclaim to the world about Christ…and THIS world certainly needs to hear.

Whether it is:
more Catholic Radio stations.

more $$$ coming in from the listeners

more orthodox members of the clergy coming forward to Teach what the Chuch teaches.

and more prayers!

We ALL have a small part of planting the ‘seeds’ for others and the Holy Spirit to nurture and grow. This IS in the BIG picture from God’s advantage point. (if not, God wouldn’t permit this to happen).

It’s just that Catholic Radio IS the medium that bring about the MOST fruit!
 
It’s extremely important. We are losing Catholics because non-Catholic Christian radio is thriving. I listen to the Christian radio station in my area because there are no Catholic stations and I find the music up-lifting. I know a lot of Catholics who do the same thing. Unfortunately, at the same time we are listening to the music, we are also hearing the conversations of the radio announcers in regard to faith alone, being saved, etc. Although the station in my area is primarily music and the talk is at a minimum, it still has influence and is confusing to those not well catechized in their Catholic faith - face it, it’s a very appealing message.
We need a lot of Catholic radion that includes both Catholic and popular Christian music, shows like Catholic Answers, and other Catholic based shows that will get people’s attention. Marketing is important to grab people’s attention so they will listen - I think we need to admit that as unfortunate as it sounds. We seem to lag way behind our Protestant friends in this area.

I agree. Many Christian stations offer a “safe” alternative to the secular nonsense. Catholic stations seem stuck on defense. Where I live there is no Catholic station that offers Catholic music, Church news, and Catholic commentary.

I think it very vital. I live about an hour and a bit north of Toronto and we do not have any Catholic radioavailable. 😦 I listen to the shows sometimes late at night on the internet but it is sometimes difficult to squeeze them in. I would love to be able to convert them to something that I could record so thet I could listen in the car on the way in to work (35 mins.)

Jerry, this past week Canada has just allowed licenses to grant didital radio broadcasts in Canada. Is Catholic Answers available through this or any other Obedient Catholic stations?

I wouldn’t be Catholic now if it wern’t for Catholic Radio in the Seattle area. Sacred Heart radio AM 1050.
 
Very important for you guys…I’m not Catholic and have been listening for over a year and half…I sometimes am really surprised at how much I know about the Catholic faith when talking to the very few Catholics that I do know. I even surprise them sometimes… but who knows…I may become a Catholic one day and it will be all because of Catholic Radio…
 
DJ…keep listening! I love Catholic radio and am thankful that I have Sirius so I can hear EWTN. I also watch EWTN on DISH. I just wish there was a Catholic news station to watch every day.

I think Catholic radio is VERY important! We NEED it!

Often Cathlolic radio is the only place where people can hear orthodox, substantial teaching. It’s vital. It’s nice that it’s available over the Internet and Sirius.
 
I absolutley love it so to me it is very important. I feel as though I am feed the highest quality diet anyone could ever want. I also think that Jesus is very honered by your work at CA. You have changed my life so please keep up the magnificent work you all do.

On some of the locally broadcast radio stations here, there are a couple of rabidly anti-catholic “preachers.” To people who do not know our faith, some of those sermons make us out to have horns & pitchforks. Catholic radio is essential for a balanced view.

Also, my brother is considering coming back home to the faith (from a fundamentalist Baptist church). I have turned him onto Catholic Answers Live, which gives him the truth in a way he can relate to, and now I understand he listens to Teresa Tomeo in the mornings, too!
 
I believe it is very important. Once I found Catholic radio in my area I decided to listen to certain programs. Then I decided to turn to it if ever one of my other favorite programs was in violation of my faith. Well, now I am exclusive to Catholic radio, except for Laura Ingraham. Every time a secular station is on it gets raunchy. Now I wonder how I was able to listen to any other stations.

Not only do I pray more now, I know more about my faith. I have learned as an adult things I was taught as a child but couldn’t process as well. I have also found out what other Catholics are doing in this world and it makes me proud to be Catholic. I have participated in boycotts (ebay on the Eucharist), and phone calling and emailing campaigns (Terri Schaivo), all based on the influence of Catholic radio.

Catholic radio is vital. I think it holds the most important spot in evangalization. It is the front line on defending our faith.
 
I cannot even begin to tell you how vital Catholic radio has been in my life.

It was the catalyst for my mother’s return to the Catholic Church, and the spiritual nourishment I needed to join the Catholic Church. Catholic radio is needed now more than ever, especially in places where priests and religious are not willing to speak the Truth of the Catholic faith. Many are being led astray.

It was due to poor catechesis that my own mother left the Catholic faith and became Protestant in the late 1970s. In the parishes that I have attended, many are still being led astray by the false teachings of priests, religious, and other leaders in the Church. I pray for them and also pray that people will tune in to Catholic radio and come to realize the errors of these false teachers.

Having Catholic radio and these CA Internet forums has been my LIFELINE in places and times when I lacked good strong fellowship with other faithful Catholics.

VERY IMPORTANT. I listen as often as I can to Catholic Answers Live on the local station (and have begun downloading the archives from the computer from the beginning - I’m up to Dec, 1999). But that station only offers about 3 hours of catholic programming per day. The rest of it is other Christian, and ethnic (don’t know if it’s Christian or not, since I don’t speak other languages). I have a shortwave radio that I use to listen to some of the other programs that EWTN radio offers. But I find it very sad that a city with over 150,000 people, in a Catholic area, can’t support an entirely Catholic station. People would be much more likely to tune in if they didn’t have to memorize the dates and times that the programming would be Catholic. And yet, there are a few protestant stations. At least C.A.Live is on 🙂

Catholic radio really is essential in that there is no other place or easy vehicle by which to communicate on an immediate level to the masses a message which just will not find a forum anywhere else on the airwaves. Amidst the secular and commercial oriented stations it serves a valuable purpose. The other stations will not offer the opportunity to present a uniquely Catholic perspective and voice to issues at hand at all (or at least not unchallenged with much depth if some caller brings it up on a show which takes calls), let alone specific concerns which will likely not be covered (or only given brief mention absent context) elsewhere. Not to mention any sort of opportunity to discuss more spiritual, apologetical, catechetical concerns which are important to bring to light and certainly can’t find a happy place even on the Christian stations. It’s sorely needed.
 
Catholic Radio is a very important part of my life spiritual formation.
I have learned so much about my faith.
I listen via the internet whenever possible. I pray that, some day, the Butler PA area has a permenant full-time Catholic station.
 
Catholic Radio is absolutely essential particularly since there are so many evangelical protestant radio stations out there already.

Relevant Radio has been the spearhead of my re-version…not that I’ve ever left the church or even considered it - it’s just that at the very stage of my life that my teens began asking some real significant questions about being Catholic, relevant radio came along and answered most of them for me!!

The resources our family has been able to access because of relevant radio have been critical to our faith development. They have inspired us to become more involved in our own parish and more comfortable with professing our Catholicism while living in a Protestant community.

We do not have cable tv so EWTN is not available to us - that leaves only Relevant Radio as our primary source of authentic Catholic teaching. It has served as the springboard to ‘real’ conversations in our family, and has helped us to understand the Church’s position on many of these critical topics of our day - abortion, euthanasia, stem-cell research, etc.
 
Catholic Radio is vital to us here in the Bible Belt. We do not have any local programming, TV or Radio, on air, so we rely on Dish Network for EWTN TV, Sirius for EWTN Radio, and broadband is very important to experience the other good Catholic programming: Relevant Radio, Ave Maria Radio, and Radio Maria.

Especially since I live in rural North Carolina, Catholic Radio is an irreplacable support system. I almost slid out of the Catholic Church in the nineties due to local liberalism and apathy; but WEWN came just in time!
