The chalice is rarely distributed here in Vancouver, BC.
It’s okay if you skip the cup due to concern for germs. Yes, you can get sick by drinking from a common cup, which is why most of the parishes around here stopped offering it for a couple months during the bad flu epidemic last year, and also why people who have a cold, flu, cough or other transmittable illness are supposed to use good sense and refrain from the cup until they are well.
The priest, deacon or EMHC offering the cup takes precautions by wiping the rim and turning the cup, which removes a lot of germs because they are either wiped or they die quickly before that part of the rim gets turned around for someone to drink again, but there’s still some possibility you could catch something. The Precious Blood does not magically protect you from transmitted disease. We are expected to use common sense, as with everything else.
If you receive the Eucharist in the form of the host, you are receiving both the Body and Blood, so you are not missing out on the Precious Blood by skipping the cup in that instance.
These is nothing magical about a communion cup. There is also nothing “magical” about the Most Precious Blood of Jesus. But the Most Precious Blood of Jesus is certainly divine (body and blood, soul and divinity). It’s the divine nature of His Most Precious Blood (not magic) that prevents disease from being transmitted during Holy Communion. Our Lord can most certainly prevent us from contracting any disease when we receive Holy Communion. And I believe that He certainly does. The cups aren’t magic. Yes, you could catch a cold from sharing a cup with 200 of your closest friends. Transubstantiation doesnt include a disinfectant. The alcohol in the wine and the wiping of the cup does help, but it’s not a silver bullet.
When I was little, we lived in a very small town. The priest didn’t employ EM’s, he just distributed the Body. So I never got in the habit of receiving the Blood, and to this day (I’m 40) I rarely receive the Blood.
The Eucharist is more than the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ.
Actually it’s due to hideous or non-existant catehchesis. But if there is any misunderstanding by Catholics, it’s because separately
Sadly, I think MANY Catholics today have no idea that the Lord’s Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity is fully present into both species of the Blessed Sacrament. The early Church always distributed Communion under both kinds. Then a heresy arose which stated that a person had to receive both kinds in order to receive Christ’s body and blood. This is wrong.
I think that CIH is more secure than COT. CIH comes with its own built-in paten. COT does not. With widespread communion in the hand, I dread to think about how many dirty feet have stood on the fragments of Our Lord that have fallen to the ground. It makes me shudder.
Whether both species are offered often depends not only on the local norms, but also the preferences of the priest in charge, and logistical factors. For any very large Mass, the Precious Blood is likely to either not be distributed at all or to be limited to a certain group of participants, like VIPs or those performing some function in the Mass, because there are logistical problems with consecrating enough Precious Blood for a large group, distributing it, and making sure there isn’t too much left over.I attended Mass in Bologna, Italy and it was the same, only the Host. Same in Germany and The Netherlands. But here in Canada both species are offered.
This is your persona opinion, it is not the teaching of the Church. These is nothing magical about a communion cup. There is also nothing “magical” about the Most Precious Blood of Jesus. As others have said, when we receive Christ’s body it’s living flesh and so contains blood (being necessary for life don’t you know) and so receiving the host (or more rarely, the chalice) alone is sufficient. However, receiving both is a fuller sign of Holy Communion Holy because it makes the Eucharistic banquet more clearly evident. Having said that, only a (con)celebrating priest must receive under both kinds and there are occasions when communion is distributed under one kind only for logistical or other reasons (such as cold and flu season).s receiving The Holy Eucharist, like I have been doing, enough?
Not too long ago a retired senior priest said that communion via intinction was now “outlawed” by the Church. I truly had to struggle not to laugh out loud!I prefer intinction, as it is done in my home parish.
Oh, did I miss something? Where did the Church proclaim this? It’s the divine nature of His Most Precious Blood (not magic) that prevents disease from being transmitted during Holy Communion.
It’s my personal belief based on my faith that my Lord is a loving and merciful God.PeterT:![]()
