I always treat people with respect. That is until they disrespect me. Sometimes when people write things, it can come across as ‘attacking’ or ‘rude’, but in actual fact, its not meant to be like that at all. With written words, its really hard to determine in what context a person is coming across.
Ive seen on this blog many times when people write a reply, and thats all they are doing, replying, and they are accused of being arrogant.
I do think many people on this blog do respect other peoples points of views, religions, race etc.
I know i most certainly do. I think people on here are very intelligent and they have great faith in their beliefs. Also great knowledge.
The fact is, not all of us agree on these beliefs and that can lead to quite heated debates. But generally underneath it all, i think we all have a certain degree of respect for each other.

I do n ot always treat people with respect, especially on the internet, and for that I am truly sorry.

In Judaism, harsh words, gossip, insults, etc., are deemed one of the worst kinds of sin. It is also, admittedly, one of the commandments that are most commonly ignored.

It is true that there are people out there who hate other people because of where they live or what community they belong to. It is also true that, as dos says, there are people who have never met me that want to “sever my head”.

It is also true, I believe, that some of those people feel this way because of things people have said. Because of a spoken word.

All the more reason I think that we should always be acutely aware of what we say and how we say it.

Yes, enemies in satan and his minions. But people? Our role is not to judge others but to bring God’s love to them. God does the judging. Christ said over and over to love our neighbors. He ate with them and DIED for them. For you to have anything BUT love for them is not God’s plan for you.

You do know that most, if not all, prostitutes out there (since you brought up the scenario of the prostitute) are there because they know no other life. The believe that that is all they are worth. They do not know God’s love nor do they believe they deserve it. OUR job is to show them the they are worthy to be loved by the Almighty and that they are worth the effort. Where do you get that ‘turning your cheek’ means you stand by and do nothing??? Turning the other cheek means you don’t strike back but that you show them the restraint that God gives you. That you know that they are trying to bait you but you won’t give in. Turning the other cheek says that they can beat you until you bleed, they can even kill you, but God will overpower ALL and that His love will still shine through. The Jews spat on Christ, they called for His blood, they beat Him, they broke His body but did He fight back? No, He asked God to FORGIVE them. That is the most awesome and powerful example of ‘turning the other cheek’.

I guess I should also point out that someone who is prostituting herself does not fall into the whole ‘turn the other cheek’ teaching. She isn’t doing something against YOU or the Church but against herself. Our job is not to turn a ‘blind eye’ (which you seem to attach to ‘turn the other cheek’) but we are to go to them and show them that they are worth the love God has for them.

How sad that these people do not know God. How incredibly sad that if they continue on this path they will be separated from God for eternity in Hell. My heart weeps for these people because they do not know God’s Love. They fight against Him because they do not know Him. And since they can’t physically challenge Him they choose to take out their spiritual struggle on us, His earthly represtentatives. I pray that they will find Him and repent.

Both here and “out there”? It is easier, I think, to treat people with disdain on the internet than it is face to face. If we can agree that this is true, does that mean that it is even more important to treat people with respect here? Or is it of minimal importance. I’d like to hear both personal opinions and theological support, if you have any.

I’m convinced that respect is more important than we can know. I try to first give respect and, if it is met with disrespect, I will ignore or avoid that person insofar as I am able. No positive reinforcement for bad behaviour. I learned that when I became a parent.

Generally, I think respect, as an attitude, translates well to the internet. Unfortunately it seems disrespect translates even better.

Before I started posting on CAF, I read many, many posts and came to admire the consistent charity and intelligence of certain posters. They never resorted to personal remarks and always helped contribute to the learning environment at CAF. I vowed, following their Christ-like example, to post with as much respect for my fellow posters as I could manage. Besides, it’s really easy to ignore rude attention-seekers online. If they’re bashing my faith, I pray to about responding. Then, if I feel called to respond, I pray about what to say.

As a Catholic poster on a Catholic forum, my words matter. I live to know and love God and my neighbour, offline or on.

Penance:
1 : an act of self-abasement, mortification, or devotion performed to show sorrow or repentance for sin
2 : a sacramental rite that is practiced in Roman, Eastern, and some Anglican churches and that consists of private confession, absolution, and a penance directed by the confessor
3 : something (as a hardship or penalty) resembling an act of penance (as in compensating for an offense)

Penance is to be done by the person who has offended. Not TO the person who has offended.

He denounced them, He didn’t hate them. They turned from Him and further attempts BY CHRIST is futile. We are to walk away if they are persistant in denying Christ. That does not mean we are to disrespect them.

Refer to the definition above. We are to do penance for OURSELVES when we do wrong. This has nothing to do with us disrespecting others.
