How important is sexual pleasure in marriage? How important is normal male sexual function for women? How would you respond if your spouse were unable to experience sexual pleasure, or unable to give you sexual pleasure?

God allowed my parents to amputate a substantial portion of my penis as an infant in Mississippi. I say this rather than describe it as circumcision because apparently what American hospitals are doing routinely to male babies is not Biblical circumcision, and I wish to avoid confusion or ambiguity. What God allowed to happen to me is more like “Brit Peri’ah” than “Brit Milah” according to that webpage.

Consequently, I cannot experience sexual pleasure through manual manipulation – it is instead physically uncomfortable, or even painful, or else rather numb (like rubbing one’s outer thigh), and I cannot orgasm or ejaculate without heavy mental stimulation. While I understand that a woman would interact in a new and fuller way within the marital embrace, I am concerned both that these problems would remain even after vowing ourselves to lifelong monogamy, and about the problems I have read women encounter with such mutilated penises, namely, similar physical discomfort and pain (due to the lack of lubricant retention which the foreskin provides, and difference in stroking method as the man tries to stimulate the only parts of his penis that still have sexual nerve endings). I am also drawn more to food than to sex, given how much more pleasurable eating is. This is another concern about a potential marriage: The woman may be more interested than I in sexual pleasure.

I have seen unhappy women vent their sexual frustrations on the internet, and apparently some even resort to having affairs. I have been praying for God to heal me, and am doing my best to believe that He will, but God has not given me any confirmation of planning to heal me apart from the Bible and Church teaching, and so far, has not healed me. I am already 27, one year into a 4-year PhD program in a foreign country (after which comes a 2-year residency in the USA before an entry-level salaried health professional position in the USA, whose health care landscape is largely unknown to due Obamacare and financial recession, i.e. $105,000/yr salaries could fall), and have roughly $137,000 in American student loan debt (interest building at roughly $800/month which I’m trying to work while in school to pay off), so my situation looks to me very bleak.

I understand that marriage is about the spouses helping each other to heaven, sharing their lives, raising children, but that sex is an essential element of it, whose end is unitive as well as procreative, so it appears I cannot simply gloss over this problem and assume it’s either not important or that everything will work itself out. What are your thoughts concerning these matters?

Your level of debt is concerning, but not ridiculous for a good healthcare job. Try not to take on more debt and think about doing a personal finance class so that once you’re done with school and have a job, you can immediately start making progress on your debt. (Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University is a favorite, but there are other options.)

Use of lubricant could presumably help a lot with discomfort for the woman.

Alternately, it shouldn’t be that difficult to find a prospective wife with very moderate sexual needs.

This is all not ideal, but it’s not an impossible situation.

Best wishes!

Hi
I am a nurse for 47 years and helped w circumcisions. They would put the boy on the papoose board to stabilize him and place a surgical steel bell over the glans of the penis and pull the foreskin up on the outside and make the incision around the bell. The glans never was cut. The nerve endings are all in the glans and there have been no problems w sexual enjoyment after circumcision unless the pediatrician messed up. My husband is from Ireland and not circumcised. My two sons are circumcised and have no complaints. My poor grandson in Russia is not and they are not pulling the foreskin back and can get infected and I am fretful because the foreskin is suppose to be free in movement forward and back.
I am sorry about your situation. I don’t think God will heal you. It will need a urologist to evaluate. Intimacy is very important in marriage and if the woman you find doesn’t get your motor going, I don’t think you are in love. If it can’t be fixed. Tell her about it and she and you can find enjoyable ways to make things exciting and work for you both.

I don’t know what Saint to pray to for this. But may God’s mercy descend on you. May He lead your path to your healing. May He bring your heart to peace. May Jesus, your brother’s presence be felt along your journey. You are not alone. May the gifts He has given you bless those you touch.

Pay off your debt as soon as you can.

We all like food, but everything in moderation. Keep an eye on your diet to make sure you are eating healthy meals and healthy snacks. Exercise.

See a urologist. Seriously. I am married to a circumcised man and the mother of a circumcised son. The complaints you have are absolutely not normal. Make an appointment and seek medical help.

Other than that, as someone else mentioned, there is always the option of seeking out a wife with a low to moderate sex drive. And make sure any prospective wife is aware of potential difficulties so that she can give full and free consent to the marriage.

I was circumcised as an adult while my wife was pregnant with out second son and was ill with a sinus infection, so there wasn’t much sex going on. This involved removing only the skin; the glans was not “amputated.” So I am one of the few adult males who has been sexually active both pre- and post-circumcision. For a long time my take was that if I woke up one morning and found that the foreskin had grown back, I would immediately be on the phone with the urologist’s office to arrange to have it removed again.

I can’t speak to what happened during the OP’s infant circumcision. Obviously I prefer being circ’ed, but that was my own choice, and I think that I prefer leaving that choice to the guy, rather than to the guy’s parents. That said, if parents are going to have an infant son circ’ed, they owe it to the boy to find a doctor who is super cautious.

Take this advice. Most men I know have had the “Modern Western” kind of circumcision, and I have never heard of anything resembling the problem you’re describing.

Yeah, see a urologist. Heck, see two or three or four urologists. A big city specialist will probably be your best option.

Yeah, see a urologist. Heck, see two or three or four urologists. A big city specialist will probably be your best option.
Agree with seeing a urologist. Also, stay off the internet reading about these things, it will only cause increased anxiety. Avoid the temptation that is Google.

There is absolutely no reason why an absent foreskin will have any effect on female lubrication during intercourse. It will not cause any pain for the woman. Any lubrication that the foreskin could even possibly retain would be minimal and have no appreciable effect. Besides, the lubrication should be present prior to intercourse anyway.

It is this sort of comment that makes me think you are reading too much online about it.

please see a doctor or correct any medical condition before entering into the sacrament of matrimony. My marriage was annulled due to non-consummation because of spouse’s impotency (cause is severe psychiatric illness). I was unaware of it due to my catholic belief of chastity…

OP, why are you masturbating? It’s a sin. I suggest you stop masturbating and trying to stimulate yourself, and try not to fixate on your penis.

Masturbation is very different than sexual intercourse between a man and a woman.

I agree with everyone else that you need to stop reading internet horror sites about circumcision, and do your best to forget what you have already read.

I agree with everyone else here that you need to see a urologist, and then see a second urologist to get a second opinion. It’s certainly possible that you are the victim of a botched circumcision, but if, as I suspect, your circumcision is like almost every other man’s, you have nothing to worry about sexually. Think about it–there are an awful lot of circumcised American men having an awful lot of sex enjoying it a whole lot!

I think that your urologist (and your second opinion urologist) will reassure you that you are perfectly normal and very capable of enjoying a sexual relationship with a woman that you love and who loves you.

But in the meantime, try to stop thinking about sex and your penis. Concentrate on your studies, your work, making friends, and above all else, serving God.

I agree that you should see a urologist about this potential issue. I also agree that you shouldn’t be masturbating. I suspect that a lot of this perceived problem might be in your head, though.

I will also say that if being circumcised bothers you so much, it is possible to restore some of the appearance and functionality of an uncircumcised penis. It might be something for you to look into, particularly if you think it could help your mental wellbeing.

This is what I think. Sex is way over rated . it is of short duration. It’s like two barrels floating bumping against each other going bing bing and then floating separately. It left me empty . like all pleasure it’s addictive . I was addicted to it and like any addict I never found fulfillment moving from one woman to the other who happened to serve that pleasure better . . it turned me into a slave .,its’ slave. But I have managed to rid myself of that monster and I can’t begin to tell you how free I feel, so free. I’ve gotten to enjoy and appreciate the company of women in ways I did not know existed or possible . My whole life took a big turn to the better .Presently I administer to a bunch of extremely vulnerable Christian refuge women and I feel like super man . finally I feel that I’m a man .and the women treat me as the man. before they wanted to kill me. now they love me .Sex has no hold on me anymore . if I ever feel otherwise I’ll cut it off before I take advantage of any of these women. Food is another area . once I freed my self from sex the other addictions seem to go away by themselves .no longer have to schedule my life according to my bodily desires. I’m lean mean mind machine now . mind over matter sort of thing.

What are your thoughts concerning these matters?
The majority of males aged 10+ in US (similar here in Australia) are circumcised. The further you go back in historical data, the higher the percentage of circumcised men. It is only more recently that non-circumcision is more common.

So, the majority of sexually active men today are circumcised. If what you are saying was true, why isn’t this a massive issue? Why aren’t circumcised men everywhere outraged at this?

I agree with advice so far - see a urologist and don’t masturbate.

Before I begin answering questions, clarifying my situation, and addressing misunderstandings, I must comment that I am dismayed by the trend I see here to defend American culture “because it is American” – namely, a kind of victim blaming to justify the routine practice of amputating men’s body parts. Instead of the neutral response, “Oh, I’m sorry you’re suffering because people cut off part of your body without your consent,” people are saying, “We cut off other people’s body parts and they haven’t complained – there must be something wrong with you.” Beware of ethnocentrism and blaming the victim.

I’ll now try to respond chronologically.
I am a nurse …] and helped [with] circumcisions. They would put the boy on the papoose board to stabilize him and place a surgical steel bell over the glans of the penis and pull the foreskin up on the outside and make the incision around the bell.
It’s worth commenting on the violence not mentioned here, since the foreskin is initially fused with the glans (it separates later after the baby develops): What you describe is literally ripping flesh from flesh. My larger point, however, is that there is not only “one” circumcision involved here: The surgeon chooses how high or low to begin cutting, i.e. how much flesh to cut off, as well as potentially removing related structures, e.g. the frenulum (which attaches the foreskin to the glans).
The nerve endings are all in the glans
This is false. The foreskin also has nerve endings, a great deal of them, and serves a very significant role in sexual activity. It is not merely “a flap of skin”, and it certainly does not lack nerve endings. Please research this matter more; a quick search online, e.g. “foreskin nerve endings” will return numerous articles with scientific support.
[You] need a urologist to evaluate.
See a urologist. …] Make an appointment and seek medical help.
I agree with everyone else here that you need to see a urologist, and then see a second urologist to get a second opinion.
I have already done so. I have been seen by an American general practitioner in Tennessee and a Japanese urologist in Gunma (who I was told was well-known and an expert), and they concluded that my penis was typical of one having undergone this so-called “Western circumcision”.
I don’t know what Saint to pray to for this.
Please join me in praying to Father Michael J. McGivney for the healing of my penis and restoration of my foreskin. Please pray with me for this intention every day until God grants it, in accordance with Matthew 18:19, Luke 18:1, and other instructions and promises of Jesus. You can use the prayer provided at the bottom of that webpage, even the prayer card which can be printed and kept in a wallet.
The complaints you have are absolutely not normal.
You’ve raised the question, “What is normal?” I would say that my reduced sensitivity is normal, not only because a certified urologist agreed that this “Western circumcision” was possibly a cause, but because others who regret what was done to them share the same complaint. This leads to a question already asked which will be answered below.

I am glad you support the right to bodily autonomy and respect God’s design for the male body to the extent that you do. There are a few comments I would like to make:

  1. *]As I said above, there is not only one kind of “Western circumcision”, that it is a function of how much flesh the surgeon decides to cut off. It is possible, for example, that yours left you with some foreskin and associated structures, instead of inches below your glans as measured when erect (removing so much flesh, as well as all structures surrounding the glans, that the skin is drawn taut upon erection), etc.
*]That you chose to undergo whatever surgery you were given indicates that you were one of the very rare men (1 in >1000) who had some problem with his foreskin. So you may not be able to compare functionality with and functionality without, because your functionality with may have had some unusual (rare) problem.
*]As mentioned earlier, a search for ‘foreskin nerve endings’ will return many articles. One journalist posits the theory of gaining sensation in one area after the cost of another. I’m inclined to disagree with this theory, but it’s worth mention. I would think far more relevant is the callusing of the glans (toughening of its skin): You have not lived 27 years with your glans exposed to become dried out and accumulating tough skin from constant rubbing against briefs underwear. In other words, you likely still have a sensitive glans due to your foreskin removal being recent, and not several decades ago.

    [continued in next post]

[continued from previous post]
There is absolutely no reason why an absent foreskin will have any effect on female lubrication during intercourse.
Before I explain, let me comment that this assertion is false and demonstrates pride on your part – or rather, heightened emotion. You are apparently upset, perhaps either because you have had this surgery done to you to some extant, or you have done this surgery to some extant to someone else. Instead of saying, “I don’t know of any reason,” you have made the jump to asserting, “There is no reason.” This is the same hubris (or logical flaw perhaps due to emotion) that we encounter from the atheist who instead of saying “I see no evidence that there is a god” says “There is no God.”

The reason, then: The additional foreskin serves as a plug or stopper to retain lubrication within the vagina between strokes; when the foreskin is missing, this lubrication tends to be retained less. This phenomena occurs for two reasons: more of a physical barrier to retain the fluid, and the strokes being less long and forceful due to greater sensitivity.
It will not cause any pain for the woman.
Thus, for these two factors, when the foreskin is absent, the lubrication will tend to leave and dry out more (from the lack of barrier), leading to the woman’s discomfort from the drier rubbing, and the woman may also experience discomfort from the more forceful and pressured stroking (as the man concentrates on only the tip of his penis, since the glans is nearly all that remains for sexual pleasure, again depending on how much flesh is removed by the surgeon).
OP, why are you masturbating?
I’m not any more, both because I wish to please God and because I physically can’t, for the reasons I’ve explained. In case you’re not aware, lack of ability to masturbate is a consequence of foreskin removal – the primary means of masturbation being manipulation of the foreskin by the hand to simulate the vagina. This has even been cited as a reason to encourage “Western circumcision.”

When I had tried to do so, it was to experiment to try to see whether I was actually capable of experiencing sexual pleasure. I’ve since grown in holiness, and have resigned myself to await God’s healing and to live chastely.
there are an awful lot of circumcised American men having an awful lot of sex enjoying it a whole lot!
You say ‘a whole lot’, but I don’t know how much they’re enjoying it. Sex can be mentally addicting, even apart from any pleasure, which could account for demand for it. I think this addictive aspect is amplified the more flesh is cut away, i.e. in proportion to how much the man requires mental stimulus. But again, this is too general a statement: This matter varies per person, just as what is actually cut off varies per surgeon.
try to stop thinking about …] your penis.
This is difficult, because the edge of the exposed glans rubs against underwear, creating discomfort that interrupts whatever I am thinking. To “try to stop thinking about it” means to try to accept this interruption and irritation and carry on, even while it continues interrupting my train of thought.

This irritation is constant while bike-riding, occurs with every stride with boxer underwear, and even occasionally with briefs (which, incidentally, promote perspiration due to the constriction, causing itching as another problem, so briefs trade one problem for another, perspiration occurring not only during the summer, but also while sitting for any substantial length of time, e.g. to do office work). In Japan the bicycle is my primary means of transportation (together with walking). This irritation and discomfort is a daily cross, one which I cannot escape. Until God heals me, I am living with this frequent vexation which causes me to hate my body, hate my life, tempts me to envy women, and hope for death. Of course I try to thank God for the blessings in my life and offer this suffering up to help others (see other threads I’ve made recently), but it is misery, and I can only affirm God’s goodness on a theoretical, doctrinal level, i.e. on faith, until He heals me.
The further you go back in historical data, the higher the percentage of circumcised men. It is only more recently that non-circumcision is more common.
As I understand it, “Western circumcision” began in the 19th century and peaked in popularity in the 20th century.
So, the majority of sexually active men today are circumcised.
Debatable, and certainly false worldwide, but it may be true if you pool the populations of the US and Australia (if the practice is equally prevalent in Australia).

It is true that ignorance is bliss. I think there are basically two reasons there is not more outrage over the atrocity that occurred to me, and apparently millions of others:

  1. *]There is a little sensitivity, not none, and the little that remains is good. Hence people, not knowing what sex was designed to be like, and having never experienced anything else, don’t know what they’re missing. It is worth mentioning here that there are surveys of licentious women who’ve experienced both, and who prefer natural men.
*]There is not only “one” circumcision: How much flesh is cut off, and which flesh (e.g. including accessory structures), varies.

  1. Great, if ignorance is bliss, why not be blissful?

You can’t change what has been done to you. Make the most of what you have. Since you are in the same position as millions of men who have had “Western circumcision”, you should just choose to be as blissful as the rest of us.

So in ultimate response to your main question…having undergone this very common procedure, you should have no trouble at all getting married and having a very fulfilling sex life with your wife.

If you have a son, you can choose whether to circumcise or not. That is the only question that is particularly relevant to your concerns with “Western circumcision”.

*]There is not only “one” circumcision: How much flesh is cut off, and which flesh (e.g. including accessory structures), varies.

For example, personally, I didn’t understand what “Western circumcision” was until I was well into my twenties. I looked down, saw the glans, and I thought ‘circumcision’ was cutting off the glans: I didn’t even know what foreskin was. Consequently, I thought the constant discomfort was “just part of being male”, and didn’t understand how people could tolerate boxers. I suppose men have varying rates of success in adapting to the discomfort, especially if they’re not great thinkers and tend to “just go with the flow”.

Likewise, I think by extension we can refer to those women you can see online who complain about discomfort and dryness during sex while not understanding the reason. I have seen artificial lubrication recommended there, too – and again we may note how the mechanism of foreskin is itself a mechanical lubricant. This anecdotal evidence gives additional credence to my understanding.

You are aware that the only person that’s mentioned American culture is you, right?

And whether or not your problem is common or unique to circumcised men has absolutely nothing to do with “fault”, so I’m at a loss as to where you get this “blaming the victim” message from. 🤷

  1. let me use a quote to reply so it will be connected to my comments. Never and i mean, never, did we have to rip the foreskin from the glans. It is a free floating piece of tissue that goes up and down. If the baby is not circumcised it should be cleansed everyday moving it up and down or smegma develops which is a white cheezy substance. There is a higher incidence of cancer in non-circumcised men and women who have sex w non-circumcised men. You are angry your parents had you circumcised. Get a check up. If anatomically, it was done correctly you won’t get penile cancer and have a wonderful time w your wife. My sons have no complaints. My husband is not circumcised and has kept his foreskin mobile and clean. There is a health issue here. Not just pleasurable feelings. If you lost some feeling w the foreskin, there is plenty in the glans. Stop masterbating. All will come naturally after your urologist check up. One day you’ll be happy you are circumcised. Think about the girls who are forceably given cliterectomies w rusty knives in sudan. It can’t be replaced. They don’t want them to have pleasure. May st jude, the saint for impossible causes, give him peace and what he desires.

Keep your eyes looking at the stars and fulfill your destiny that god has given you… Seek ye first the kingdom of god and everything else shall be given unto you.

  1. Eh, female discomfort because of lack of lubrication often has obvious causes that have nothing to do with the male party: lack of arousal, Phase 3, breastfeeding, perimenopause, menopause, whatever.

You’re putting way too many eggs in the circumcision basket–it really honestly is not that important from the female side.
